Rivian Says The R2 Has Half The Carbon Footprint Of An R1SInsideEVs[email protected] (Nico DeMattia)Tue, September 22, 2026 at 9:36 PM UTCAdd us on Google2027 Rivian R2: First Drive On- and Off-RoadThe R2 helped Rivian hit its carbon footprint goals four years early, the company claims in its latest sustainability report. Most car companies talk a big game when it comes to their carbon footprint. They always talk about reducing their overall emissions usage, recycled materials, and improved manufacturing techniques. But Rivian actually wants to prove it. The electric truck company just released its 2025 Impact Report and R2 Circularity, Energy, & Carbon Footprint Report, which prove that the Rivian R2 is twice as good for the polar bears as the R1.Admittedly, we're talking lifecycle carbon footprint, not the manufacturing phase alone. Thanks to lighter weight and improved aero, the Rivian R2 is simply more efficient rolling down the road than its heavier, larger sibling. But it's also cleaner to make. The R2 is constructed using 25% recycled materials, and its interior can almost entirely go in the recycling bin. The textiles are made from Nordic paper waste, its frunk and trim are made from 85% consumer waste, the floor mats are 99% ocean waste, and the resin battery cell trays are 100% recycled.AdvertisementAdvertisementAll of this means that the Rivian R2 has half the lifetime carbon footprint as the R1.Rivian R2 Coastal Cloud Signature interiorOne of the R2's new features that helps is its integrated smart charging, which prioritizes charging the car at low-peak times of day. So while it's plugged in at home, it will try to charge when its cheapest, as often as possible.Rivian is teachin' 'em young, too. It expanded its education network to 45 colleges and trade schools, to help teach young people about energy savings and sustainable manufacturing techniques. Hell, Rivian is even going so far as to challenge its part suppliers, requiring all potential Tier 1 direct suppliers to have human rights and environmental screenings. The Rivian R2 isn't half the size of the R1, nor is it half the cost. But it's half as harmful to the world, and that's the truly important part. So know that if you own one, every mile you drive is one that's more efficient and more environmentally friendly than a mile in an R1. Even if some of those miles come from torching tires to bits. Here are some similar storiesRivian EVs Are Getting A Software Update That Makes It Easier To Dodge The CopsThe Rivian R2 Will Let You Drift Like Chris Harris Until the Tires Blow Up
