Rivian offers a new color for the 2027 Rivian R1T and R1S.RivianWith the Rivian R2 electric SUV slowly trickling out deliveries this summer, the original Rivians have been updated for the next model year. It feels like the American EV brand is attempting to align its lineup now that there's a new vehicle in the mix.For 2027, the R1S and R1T both have a new base exterior color option: Esker Silver. Out goes LA Silver (a brighter gray) and in comes the more metallic, warmer gray. An esker is a winding ridge of gravel and sand. The color was first introduced on the R2, so now R1 and R2 are better aligned on exterior colors. Esker is now the no-cost option across the Rivian lineup. Unique to R2 is Launch Green and Catalina Cove blue. For the original R1 lineup there's also a new trim description. Instead of motors defining the trims the three trims are Premium (formerly Dual), Performance (formerly Tri) and Quad to match the R2 lineup naming.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor the R1S the top-requested feature makes its way into the second row: an option for captain's seats.Pricing for the two seats instead of a three-seater bench is a $1,500 add-on across trims, but is only part of interior upgrade packages with the Sound and Vision package for Premium (totaling $4,000 for the captain's chairs on a Black Mountain with Dark Ash Wood interior). The priciest build is a Premium trim with Sound and Vision with an Ocean Coast with Dark Ash Wood interior for $6,000.For Performance and Quad the Black Mountain Signature with Brown Ash Wood interior adds captain's seats for $1,500. Certain Performance and Quad interiors are only available with captain's chairs layout for $4,000 (Ocean Coast Signature with Driftwood) and $4,500 (Slate Sky Signature with Walnut Wood).Captain's seats make it to the new Rivian R1S.Captain's seats in the new Rivian R1S are available in different colors and accents. The R2 starts at $57,990 until a Standard version arrives spring 2027, while the R1S and R1T start at $83,990 and $79,990, respectively. The configurator is live with the new options and trims for R1 on the Rivian website.AdvertisementAdvertisementWith the trim rebrand and new captain's chairs, Rivian is showing it hasn't pushed its original product to the wayside, but instead is reinvigorating the existing brand and using the new launch to elevate the brand overall. Slow sales in 2025 have jumped nearly 17% in 2026 so far. This article was originally published on Forbes.com
