Lamborghini Urus SE Performante Is A Hardcore PHEVLamborghiniThere's a new top-dog Lamborghini SUV, and it's called the Urus SE Performante. Just revealed on Wednesday, this Urus is based off the plug-in hybrid SE model, but brings the extreme design and performance you'd expect from a Performante model.Output ticks up by a smidge over the SE, with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 and electric motor combining for 801 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque—which makes it the most powerful Urus yet. Lamborghini claims a 0-62 mile-per-hour time of just 3.3 seconds, which is identical to the gas-only Urus Performante. This hybrid has 144 horsepower more than the previous Performante, highlighting the weight penalty of adding a big 25.9-kilowatt-hour battery pack and electric motor to the equation.LamborghiniJust like the previous Urus Performante, though, this one's focus is on handling and driving dynamics. To that end, Lamborghini introduces a new "AURA" dual-chamber air suspension system paired with new dual-valve dampers. Lamborghini says the primary air chamber supports "pure dynamics and track driving," while the secondary chamber is "focused more on comfort." The aim is to produce a hard-edged track machine, while maintaining the comfort Urus owners are accustomed to. Lamborghini used a steel spring suspension in the previous Urus Performante, so this one should be much more pleasant for daily use.AdvertisementAdvertisementOutside the suspension, Lamborghini increased the track width by 0.6 inch for greater lateral stability, and offers wider 22-inch wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Race tires optionally. It's also taking advantage of the same 6D sensor and "Integrated Power Brake" control unit introduced on the one-off Fenomeno. Lamborghini says this new sensor suite ultimately results in a 10 percent increase in braking power and 12 percent improvement in system responsiveness versus the previous Urus Performante.LamborghiniAlso aiding handling is a new aero package that results in a 16 percent increase in downforce compared to the first Performante. Lamborghini attributes this to the new front splitter, while high-speed stability is enhanced with a new upper and lower spoiler combo. The carbon fiber hood also has new vents that function like an S-duct to improve thermal management of the powertrain. Even the brakes see an 8 percent increase in cooling efficiency from a new dedicated NACA duct integrated with the front splitter to bathe cool air over the discs and calipers.LamborghiniYou'll see more carbon fiber used throughout than any other Urus. Lamborghini says it managed to reduce the weight of the SE Performante by about 70 pounds compared to the SE. A good chunk of this comes from the new titanium Akrapovic exhaust system, but tweaks to sound deadening, interior upholstery choices and a generous smattering of carbon fiber take care of the rest. Despite this focus on weight reduction, it still weighs 5472 pounds, or about 700 pounds more than the old non-hybrid Performante.LamborghiniThe last big upgrade for the SE Performante is a new Rally driving mode that's "specifically calibrated to deliver maximum driving excitement on loose surfaces." Lamborghini hasn't revealed a price for this high-performance PHEV yet, but expect it to be the most expensive Urus yet when it goes on sale. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
