Richard Hammond has driven more cars than most people, and certainly has his favorites. He loves Porsche 911s, Subaru Impreza STIs, and also a 1963 Opel Kadett A called "Oliver". But the Top Gear and Grand Tour star has one favorite that a lot of people might not know about. This is a car that Hammond labeled the "greatest car ever built" and it just so happens that he has one in bits in his garage. The time has now come to try and put it back together — but can you guess what it is? Richard Hammond Has An Iconic Car In Boxes In His Garage YouTube/ DrivetribeWhereas normal folks might have a box of scratched CDs and some half empty rattle cans in their garage, not Richard Hammond. One of the world's most famous car guys has all the parts for a legendary car stored in various boxes. Having bought the car after an episode of Top Gear, the Hamster took it apart, rivet by rivet, and then never got around to putting it back together again. The Car Was The Star Of A Famous Top Gear Poll YouTube/ DrivetribeAlmost a quarter of a century ago, Top Gear did a poll for the greatest car ever built. Hammond championed the humble Land Rover, which faced stiff competition from none other than the legendary McLaren F1 (AKA still the world's fastest naturally aspirated car) and the Ford Mustang. The British public was asked to vote, not via the internet (this was in the days before everyone had a fast Wi-Fi connection) but over the telephone. It turned out that the Land Rover actually won, and Hammond loved the example that was featured on the weekly motoring show so much that he bought it. As is a familiar story for many of us, Hammond then decided to restore it — but never finished the job. "I took it home, and a few years later decided, right, it's time to embark upon a magnificent restoration of this car," he explains. "I took it apart completely. Drilled out every rivet and laid it all out. And that's as far as it got. Nothing else happened. So now well over two decades later I am going to rebuild it." This Is A Slow Build - And All The Better For It Rather than going for a snappy montage, Hammond will be restoring his Land Rover properly. That is filming it as a series on Drivetribe and asking an expert, Rob from CKD Shop, to show him how to do it. The series starts with the engine. The video is slow burn and nerdy, but pure engine porn for us gearheads. Luckily, as the duo talk bearings and flywheels, Hammond is on hand to add a bit of chirpy commentary to proceedings. The 50-horsepower 1.6-liter unit will "run like a Phantom engine" at the end, he says, before later acknowledging that this level of engine geekery may not be something you should share while socializing. "If you're not into engines this isn't a conversation to take to the pub because people will look at you funny." The Episode Is The First Of Many Following The Restoration YouTube/ Drivetribe This kind of content it what made shows like Wheeler Dealers great — so we are all up for it. Spoiler alert: the engine is finished and looks incredible. This is just the first step to getting the Series 1 Land Rover back on the road. "Obviously, there is the matter now of building an entire car," Hammond says to Rob at the end. "To go around the setting, if you will, for your jewel of an engine." We can't wait to find out how the rest of the restoration turns out.Sources: Drivetribe.com
