Not only was it McLaren's first plug-in hybrid – an entry-level model at that – but it also debuted a brand-new carbon fiber chassis built just for electrified speed machines. However, the timing wasn't exactly great. The Artura was announced in the middle of the COVID-19 chaos, with supply chain issues and chip shortages everywhere. Production got pushed back again and again, and American customers didn't get their hands on one until 2023.AdvertisementAdvertisementNow, just a few years later, it looks like the Artura is already heading for the exit.2025-2026 McLaren Artura CoupeMcLarenReport Says Production Will End in 2028According to Automotive News, McLaren is expected to discontinue the Artura in 2028, citing a person familiar with the company's product plans. A McLaren spokesperson declined to comment on future models when asked about the report. The writing's on the wall, however. Artura sales haven't been great lately. In 2025, 510 Arturas were registered in the US – a 15% bump from the year before. But the party didn't last: registrations dropped 18 percent in the first half of 2026, down to just 205 cars, according to Mobility Global, cited by Automotive News. This news comes after a rough patch for McLaren. The company has been through ownership shakeups, cash infusions, and plenty of belt-tightening to try to stop the bleeding after years of losses and production headaches. Execs have already admitted that sticking to two-seat supercars isn't enough if they want to keep the lights on.2025-2026 McLaren Artura CoupeMcLarenA Different Kind of McLaren Is ComingIf the rumors are true, McLaren's about to go big. Dealers have supposedly seen plans for at least one new model every year until 2028. First up is a new mid-engine hybrid V6 supercar, codenamed P34, landing in 2027. It's said to pack around 810 horsepower and will take over from the recently retired 750S as McLaren's main event.AdvertisementAdvertisementBut this time, McLaren's dialing up the luxury. The P34 is rumored to get a seriously plush interior – think aniline leather, Nappa upholstery, and design cues straight from the legendary McLaren F1.And if that's not wild enough, McLaren's first SUV – codenamed P47 – is supposedly coming in 2028. It'll seat five, be bigger than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, and still rock a coupe-like shape. There's also talk of a new grand tourer with 2+2 seating to replace the current GTS.It's a big change for McLaren, a brand built on featherweight, driver-first supercars. Now, it looks like the future is all about mixing daily comfort with high speed. If these reports pan out, the Artura won't just be McLaren's first plug-in hybrid – it'll kick off a whole new era for the brand. This story was originally published by Autoblog on Sep 16, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
