The now Volkswagen-owned American pickup truck/SUV manufacturer has a rich history in the off-road space. As of October 2024, Scout Motors has garnered the attention of many with its announcement of the Harvester range extending drivetrain option for its upcoming models. The overwhelmingly positive response came in the form of over 80% of Scout vehicle reservations to include the gasoline-burning range-extender option. This is a clear sign that extended range flexibility is preferred over pure battery-powered EVs. How this trend will affect the brand's launch priorities is the next question. The table below focuses on confirmed and reported extended range model vehicles that will be available in the United States market. Scout Introduces The Harvester Drivetrain The EV Takes A Backseat To The EREV Scout Motors It was during a reveal event in Franklin, Tennessee, that Scout CEO Scott Keogh unveiled the two models of the freshly revived Scout brand: the Traveler SUV and the Terra pickup truck. Notably, as of the October 2024 announcement, they would now both be offered as extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) as well as full-battery-electric vehicles. This announcement is a bit of an adaptation from the original revival plans announced in 2022 as a pure battery-electric vehicle or BEV. Scout Motors The EREV itself is an exciting and realistic take on EV technology, bridging the gap for customers who struggle with the current limits of the EV but love the idea of less reliance on fossil fuels. Extended range technology isn't new. In fact, the 2011 Chevrolet Volt is widely regarded as the first mass-produced EV that was expressly marketed as an extended-range electric vehicle. Beginning in 2014, BMW also released an extended-range vehicle. The BMW i3 REx was another popular EREV option from the luxury automaker. The i3 REx's range extender added another 80 miles of range, sipping fuel here and there, but keeping the batteries "topped off." Scout Motors For Scout, the Harvester is its optional drivetrain comprised of an internal combustion four-cylinder paired with an on-board generator. This is a wonderfully transitional drivetrain that's available for those who want the flexibility of significantly extended range from the engine/generator, along with the unrelenting power, and smaller eco-footprint of an EV. This system extends the range of the Terra or the Traveler to over 500 miles. The gas engine sends no power to the wheels whatsoever; it is instead directly connected to a generator that recharges the battery on the go. The electric-only drivetrain achieves roughly 150 miles of range before the four-cylinder-powered generator comes to the rescue and starts to recharge the battery. There are, of course, trade-offs. Scout Motors EREV Demand The Customer Is Always Right Scout MotorsThe EV saw explosive sales growth after 2020. This trend continued until it peaked in 2024. Sales remained steady for 2025 but finally, in Q4 of that year, the message was sent with EV market share falling to a mere 5.7%. This is down a full 8.7% from one year prior. The loss of federal incentive to buy an EV, and a continued shortage of charging stations and related infrastructure, combined with the overall underperformance of select mainstream EVs are likely the culprits of sales figures taking a dip. Unfortunately for the EV, bad news spreads quicker than good news, which doesn't help quell the many concerns of potential customers. Considering the uncertain future for BEV sales and growing range anxiety of potential buyers, Scout wasted no time coming up with its version of a range extender for the Terra and Traveler EVs. The payoff for Scout's newly added drivetrain was equally swift, with 85% of the roughly 150,000 reservations for the rugged new Scout off-roaders that include the Harvester range extender option.Scout Motors Admittedly, Keogh was surprised by the overwhelming request for the Harvester range extender option, thinking the ratio would be closer to 60/40 for the EREV instead of the 85/15, he said in one interview. With such a strong push for the new Harvester, the question remains which will be released first; the BEV or the EREV? Keogh has also stated publicly on stage at the BloombergNEF Summit in San Francisco that the EREV will "most likely" get the jump as Scout officially re-enters auto sales in the United States. The EREV can be polarizing, but overall, it means well. Some critics may say that the EREV is a detour from the fully battery-electric vehicle that slows infrastructure construction, allows the consumer an easy way out, and is still reliant on fossil fuels. However, the EREV isn't an easy way out for the consumer. The extended range vehicle is a realistic and reasonable transition to electric transportation that offers a game-changing amount of confidence and range for vehicles that aren't primarily powered by an internal combustion engine. The Potential Of Extended Range Vehicles Coming To A Dealership Near You Scout MotorsPeople have serious expecations for their vehicles that include safety, reliability and environmental responsibility. Meeting all three of these criteria can be challenging for both EV and conventional internal combustion-powered vehicles. Since the EREV is a nice compromise, its popularity and promise has already exploded in China, where the EREV is widely accepted and used, with sales having doubled every year from 2021 to 2024. China's vehicle consumer base shares similar concerns about range limits of full EV's, and the lack of enough charging infrastructure, relative to demand. The sales numbers for China's full-size SUVs that are considered extended range support these sentiments, with 1.5 million units being sold worldwide for 2025 alone.Scout Motors With staggering sales numbers like that, it's no mystery why Ford and Ram are both looking to enter their full-size truck EREV sooner than later. The Ford F-150 Lighting, once a gasoline-powered V8 truck, was turned into a full EV for the 2022 model year. For 2026, the Lighting EV was discontinued so Ford could focus on the next generation F-150 Lighting. This new F-150 Lightning is said by Ford to have over 700 miles of range.Ram Ram also brings an EREV to the table with the impressive Ram 1500 REV. The new Ram Rev comes close to the Ford in range at 690 miles, plus it makes 647 horsepower, according to Rams website. Other American automakers have also seen the writing on the wall and are currently making plans for EREV models. We can expect a Jeep Grand Wagoneer EREV, both a Hyundai and Genesis SUV, even some reports of the next generation Nissan Rogue to receive some version of EREV technology. The EREV still provides the blistering performance of instant torque loved by many EV enthusiasts without the worry of where to charge next, or a thirsty, gas-burning engine under the hood, especially one that could be considered a performance equivalent. FAQs Are global EV sales declining? While sales of EVs have fluctuated over the years, increasing by 40% between 2022 and 2023, but only by 10% between 2023 and 2024, they have not officially declined. In fact, 2025 saw a 20% increase in global EV registrations. However, there have been signs that this growth is slowing moving into 2026, with some markets reporting an early slump. Speaking locally, there was only a 1% increased uptake of EVs in 2025. How does Scout's EREV work? Scouts EREV system is a drivetrain available as an alternative to the full EV drivetrain. The main idea is that the vehicle is one hundred percent electrically driven. It uses electric motors to drive the wheels, and a small internal combustion engine to run an on-board generator. The Harvester range extender uses a 60–70 kWh battery instead of the larger 120–130 kWh battery in the full EV. This battery provides around 150 miles of range. When that is reached, the small normally aspirated engine runs a generator that keeps the battery charged. Is Scout making a gas engine? No, Scout does not produce a traditional internal combustion engine. The engine that is used for the Harvester is sourced from Volkwagen, but only functions as power for a generator to keep the battery charged.
