Gasgoo Munich- Dongfeng Automobile Co. is set to launch its Dongfeng OpenVAN autonomous logistics brand. The company will unveil the new line on June 6, 2026, in Xiangyang, Hubei, according to a June 3 report by Gasgoo. As Dongfeng Automobile's first standalone brand for self-driving commercial vehicles, OpenVAN aims to bridge a rare gap in the market: full-scenario coverage ranging from last-mile delivery to industrial park logistics. The logistics sector is currently squeezed by surging labor costs and efficiency bottlenecks, making automation, electrification, and intelligence the only way forward. With the industry entering a critical window for mass adoption, Dongfeng’s move to introduce OpenVAN now is seen as a landmark effort. It signals a push to collaborate with top-tier autonomous driving players and steer commercial vehicle technology into more complex, "deep waters."The name carries a dual strategy. "Open" signals an open ecosystem spanning technology and manufacturing platforms, while "VAN" returns to the fundamentals of logistics: a mobile, intelligent transport unit. Its stated mission is straightforward: make logistics simpler, transport safer, and cities greener. The launch will feature four L4 autonomous models at once, with cargo capacities ranging from 2 to 60 cubic meters. These vehicles are designed to slice into specific niches, including last-mile delivery, urban logistics, and enclosed industrial parks.Image source: ZelosNotably, Dongfeng Automobile has forged a deep strategic partnership with Zelos, a global provider of L4 autonomous driving solutions. The two have co-developed a full-stack "Zelos Inside" system based on the Dongfeng OpenVAN platform. Leveraging a data loop covering 100 million kilometers from operating a fleet of over 25,000 vehicles, Zelos has built a rigorous framework for OpenVAN. This system optimizes traffic efficiency, identifies risks, and ensures safety fallbacks—laying a solid technical foundation for the commercial rollout of autonomous driving.
