Photo Credit: Getty ImagesA dashboard failure in one BYD Seal left the steering wheel display blank, blocking the driver from seeing the speedometer and other instrument-cluster information. Here's what to knowIn a video posted to YouTube, the owner wrote, "My BYD Seal's driver display went completely black, so there's no speedometer and no instrument cluster, just an empty screen behind the steering wheel."Before accepting the cost of a service-center visit, the owner worked through several common troubleshooting steps. In the Seal, the driver display is where key information, such as speed, normally appears. That makes a blacked-out cluster immediately affect how usable the vehicle feels day to day.To place the issue in a broader ownership timeline, the owner called it the "third mid-sized technical issue" in 2.5 years with the vehicle. The earlier two were a 2024 incompatibility with a Kempower 800V charger and the 2025 "#BrakeGate."The owner said both of those earlier problems were resolved, leaving open the possibility that this glitch may also be fixable, even if the at-home resets do not solve it.What can be done? After the car started acting up, the owner went through a set of practical checks at home, including plugging it in to charge, rebooting the system, disconnecting the 12V battery, using a steering wheel reset, and initiating V2L discharge. The driver was even considering either a factory reset or an OTA update. The video also indicates that after all those attempts, the driver may need to get professional help: "...and finally the service center route."The owner closed with a direct request for more information from fellow drivers: "If you've had the same problem or found something that worked, please share in the comments. I'll share an update as soon as I know more."Where can I learn more? For more on BYD and EV problems like this one, these stories cover similar issues.• BYD drew criticism after lidar on its cheapest EVs was framed by some as marketing.• In China, BYD sent dealers the updated Sealion 06 DM-i with optional lidar and 310 km range.• In Santa Clarita, drivers confronted charging-station vandalism that left locals wondering who did it.• At another public site, passersby spotted an alarming vandalism trend spreading around EV charging stations.Get TCD's free newsletters for easy tips, smart advice, and a chance to earn $5,000 toward home upgrades.
