BYD plans to sell 1.3 million vehicles in overseas markets in 2026, up 24% from about 1.05 million in 2025. Alexandre Baldy, the head of BYD’s Brazil operations, recently announced that the company is accelerating the localization process at its Brazilian factory, with the goal of achieving 50% local manufacturing or procurement of components by the end of 2026. This move will be a crucial step in BYD’s strategy to become the best-selling automaker in Brazil by 2030. BYD’s factory in Camaçari, Bahia, Brazil, is the former manufacturing base of American automaker Ford, which was closed in 2021. BYD invested 5.5 billion Brazilian reais (approximately US$1.1 billion) to transform this industrial zone, covering over 4 million square meters, into a new energy vehicle production base. Since commencing production in October 2025, the factory has produced approximately 25,000 vehicles, primarily manufacturing pure electric and hybrid models for the Brazilian market. Denza Officially Launches in Brazil Alexandre Baldy stated that BYD is rapidly transitioning to a local supply system. The 50% localization target encompasses components produced in-house by BYD, as well as products sourced from local suppliers, such as tires. In terms of production processes, BYD’s local stamping, welding, and painting workshops are nearing completion. The goal is to expand the annual production capacity from the projected 150,000 units by the end of 2026 to 300,000 units. BYD’s Brazilian Manufacturing Facility It is worth noting that BYD previously developed a dedicated 1.5 DM-i flex-fuel hybrid engine for the Brazilian market. This engine can run on both gasoline and ethanol, perfectly adapting to Brazil’s unique energy mix characteristics. Currently, Brazil has become BYD’s largest single market outside of China. The factory BYD is building locally is ultimately expected to create 20,000 jobs in Brazil. BYD’s Brazilian Manufacturing Facility Data shows that since entering the Brazilian new energy passenger vehicle market in 2021, BYD’s cumulative sales have exceeded 130,000 units. For the full year of 2024, BYD sold over 76,000 vehicles in Brazil, a year-on-year increase of 328%. In the first quarter of 2025, sales surpassed 20,000 units, securing its position as the leader in local new energy vehicle sales. The accelerated localization at the Brazil factory is just one example of BYD’s globalization strategy in 2025. According to its plan, BYD aims to sell 1.3 million vehicles in markets outside China in 2026, representing a 24% increase from the approximately 1.05 million units sold in 2025.
