The new SUV is available in eight variants, priced from 229,900 yuan (33,800 USD) to 279,900 yuan (41,200 USD). Buyers can choose between battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains. The Sealion 08 adopts styling inspired by BYD’s Ocean S concept car. Its front end features split headlights, with the upper units incorporating a full-width light bar. Dynamic air channels are integrated into both sides of the front bumper, while a roof-mounted lidar sensor supports the vehicle’s driver-assistance capabilities. All versions are equipped with BYD’s God’s Eye B intelligent driving assistance system, including the God’s Eye 5.0 platform. BYD said the vehicle offers a dual safeguard comprising automated parking assistance and urban navigation assistance. The front and rear of BYD Sealion 08. Inside, the Sealion 08 uses BYD’s Ocean Aesthetics 2.0 design language. The cabin is finished in a light beige colour scheme and includes extensive soft leather-like surfaces, mother-of-pearl-pattern decorative panels, an adjustable ambient light strip and oval chrome air vents. The dashboard retains a limited number of physical controls for frequently used functions. Other equipment includes a floating central touchscreen, a full digital instrument cluster and a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel. BYD also highlights the use of sound-insulating materials and premium audio components. The Sealion 08 is offered with either five or six seats. Six-seat versions feature two second-row captain’s chairs with armrests, electric adjustment and leg supports. A large roof-mounted entertainment screen is also available for rear passengers. READ ALSO BYD Sealion 08 launches in China: second-gen Blade Battery on both PHEV and EV models Plug-in hybrid versions The plug-in hybrid Sealion 08 uses BYD’s fifth-generation DM technology, combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with electric motors. The engine produces a maximum of 115 kW. The plug-in hybrid range includes single-motor and dual-motor versions. The single-motor model uses a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor. The dual-motor model has front and rear motors, each rated at 200 kW (268 hp). The plug-in hybrid version offers up to 400 km of CLTC-rated electric range and a combined range of up to 1,650 km with a full tank and fully charged battery. BYD lists fuel consumption of 4.6 liters per 100 km with a depleted battery. Battery-electric versions The battery-electric Sealion 08 is available with either a single motor or dual motors. Single-motor models offer electric motors rated at 320 kW (429 hp) or 370 kW (496 hp). The dual-motor version combines a 215 kW (288 hp) front motor with a 370 kW (496 hp) rear motor. Two battery packs are available, with capacities of 92.093 kWh and 115.072 kWh. Depending on the configuration, CLTC-rated range is listed at 800 km or 900 km. The vehicle also supports BYD’s fast-charging technology. The Sealion 08 can gain a usable charge in five minutes and reach a full charge in nine minutes under the applicable charging conditions. Other technologies available on the Sealion 08 include BYD’s DiSus-A intelligent body-control system, dual-chamber air suspension with road-preview capability and rear-wheel steering. Editor’s comment Whether in its hybrid or pure electric version, the Sealion 08 comes as standard with BYD’s second-generation Blade battery, however, to date, BYD still faces production capacity issues with the second-generation Blade.
