The up-spec ID.3 is the most potent variant in the five decades that Volkswagen has offered the nameplate.VW is looking to the nameplate's history while also consciously rejecting it. - Credit: VolkswagenIn practice, this means it's rated at 322 horsepower from its single electric motor. That represents an impressive increase, as VW's 2026 Golf GTI puts down 241 horsepower from its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhat's more, the ID.3 even manages to edge out the GTI 50 Edition, as it previously held the title of the brand's most powerful GTI with 321 horsepower. Torque isn't even close, as it makes over 401 lb-ft compared to some 310 lb-ft.The ID.3 is very Golf-like in form and positioning, so the GTI version heralds a meaningful power increase compared to its gas counterpart. - Credit: VolkswagenStill, far more jarring than the increase in giddyup or the change in energy production would have to be the powertrain. For the first time in 50 years of GTI history, Volkswagen is offering a model with rear-wheel drive.Mind you, that's a departure even among the badge's electrified variants. At least the ID. Polo GTI somewhat kept with its heritage by sending power to the wheels through a front-mounted electric motor. An enthusiast appealAlthough the branding is bound to be divisive among purists, the ID.3 GTI does carry the GTI spirit forward within the interior.Naturally, VW had to include some tartan fabric. - Credit: VolkswagenFor instance, VW says a new GTI mode sets all drive and chassis parameters to maximum sportiness while simultaneously unlocking launch control. It also switches the display and pipes in internal combustion engine noises.AdvertisementAdvertisementOf course, being a GTI, it brings plenty of red accents. To tie the lineage together, Volkswagen even designed a new tartan check pattern that's been a staple since the first Golf GTI seats in 1976.Beyond the enthusiast appeal, it promises to be a pretty practical hatch like its predecessors (even with an EV powertrain). Thanks to the ID.3's support for rapid charging, Volkswagen says it can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in around 29 minutes. The red livery and badging are intentional GTI choices, too. - Credit: VolkswagenTo that end, the range also sounds like it should be respectable. VW claims the ID.3 GTI can achieve driving distances of up to 373 miles on a charge.Availability and pricingAt this stage, Volkswagen is showing off the ID.3 GTI as a near-production vehicle, so it has not yet announced pricing or availability.AdvertisementAdvertisementI wouldn't expect it to land in the United States, as the automaker currently only offers the ID.4 and ID.
