Tiguan is also coming to the U.S., where the ID.4 has recently been discontinued. The Volkswagen ID.4 is dead. Long live the new Volkswagen ID. Tiguan! Just six years after its introduction, the German automaker is retiring the compact electric crossover's name, but its replacement is nearly finished and ready to right all of the ID.4's wrongs. The new Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will be revealed early next month, with the first European deliveries set for early next year. And yes, the ID.4's successor is coming to the United States, though we don't have a date for its debut here yet.2027 Volkswagen ID. Tiguan camouflaged prototype"The ID. Tiguan is planned to succeed the ID.4 in the North American market," a company representative said. "Following its European launch in early 2027, Volkswagen will share North American timing and additional market-specific details in due course."As a reminder, Volkswagen's factory in Chattanooga stopped assembling U.S.-spec ID.4s in April to make room for more gas-powered SUVs, leaving potential customers with whatever is left in dealers' inventories. To sweeten the deal, VW is offering discounts of up to $12,500 for a new ID.4, transforming the perfectly average crossover into a fantastic deal. But the ID. Tiguan isn't just a new name—it's Volkswagen's chance to make its Tesla Model Y fighter a force to be reckoned with. The original ID.4 was riddled with software issues, and parts of the interior felt like an exercise in cost-cutting. To VW's credit, the software problems were ultimately ironed out, but the lack of physical controls was never fixed. An electronic door latch recall that prompted a stop sale also dented the car's reputation.2027 Volkswagen ID. Tiguan camouflaged prototypeHere's where the updated electric Tiguan comes into play. Despite using the same underpinnings as the ID.4, the new EV is set to receive the same interior treatment as the ID.3 Neo and ID. Polo. In other words, proper buttons for all four electric windows, volume control, and the climate system. VW's latest Android Automotive OS-based infotainment system is also expected to make an appearance, enabling owners to download and install native apps for audio streaming. The exterior also gets a comprehensive overhaul, with a new light signature akin to that of VW's latest electric offerings. Plus, the Tiguan name should help with sales—that's what the company hopes, at least. There's no word on what powers the ID. Tiguan yet, but if Volkswagen follows the same route as with the ID.3 Neo, we can expect slightly larger battery packs, faster charging, and more powerful electric motors. For context, the outgoing ID.4 can be had with a single rear motor that makes 282 horsepower or with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup with 335 hp. Battery-wise, the 2026 model only came with a 77-kilowatt-hour (usable) pack that enables 291 miles of range on the RWD version and 263 miles on the AWD variant. Older ID.4s could also be had with a 58-kWh pack.More Stories Like ThisThe Volkswagen ID.4 Just Got Up to $12,500 Cheaper in AmericaThis Sub-$20,000 Volkswagen ID.4 Proves Used EVs Are The Ultimate BargainVolkswagen Took Many Risks With The ID.4.
