VW set a mid-term sales target for the brand of 400k-500k cars annually. Unlike the Volkswagen Jetta sedan sold in other markets, the Jetta in China operates as a separate entry-level brand under FAW-Volkswagen. It has sold low-cost ICE (internal combustion engines) sedans and SUVs since 2019 and is now preparing to add plug-in hybrid and all-electric models. The Jetta X is described as a pure electric SUV concept. Volkswagen did not release technical specifications, dimensions, battery details, range, or powertrain information. Jetta X electric concept What the company did show was the design. The concept has a boxy shape, pronounced fenders, trapezoidal wheel arches with black cladding, narrow LED light signatures front and rear, and skid-plate style trim with red tow hooks. The interior follows a minimalist layout with large screens and few physical controls. Jetta said it plans to launch five models by 2028, four of which will be new energy vehicles (NEVs) and one ICE. The first mass-produced model is scheduled to go on sale later this year. The brand is targeting China’s entry-level NEV segment. Jetta is aiming at the 100,000 yuan (14,700 USD) price band, though Volkswagen did not disclose pricing for the concept itself. The X concept also reflects a broader shift in Volkswagen’s China strategy, where the group is leaning more heavily on localised development and separate brand positioning to compete with domestic EV makers in lower price segments. Volkswagen is battling falling sales in China as ICE car sales are shrinking and its electric models don’t sell well there. The German brand sold 125,433 cars in China in March, down 22.1% from the same month last year, continuing the ninth consecutive month of year-over-year sales decline. For now, the Jetta X is only a concept, but with the first Jetta NEV due this year, a production version is likely not far away. We will keep an eye on it.
