A man took his wife's car into the dealership for routine maintenance, and everything went smoothly until the brake pads were brought up. In the TikTok, Jon (@vermeer2020) reveals how the dealership quoted him a price to replace the brake pads that just didn’t seem right at all. The TikTok has over 41,100 views as of this writing. “Everything went great, until they called me,” Jon begins. Jon says the dealership called to bring up the brakes, which were something he expected to be checked on while the car was there. “Well, you’ll need pads on the front,” he reports the dealership saying. Jon asked how much this would cost, and the dealership quoted him $504. “For pads?” Jon replies. Tell us what you think! View Comments He then asks if this included rotors and labor, and the dealership clarified that this was, in fact, just for the pads. Jon was in disbelief at the quote being just for the brake pads. “This ain’t mathing up,” Jon shares. Jon declined this quote and headed straight to O'Reilly Auto Parts. He selected the best brake pads in stock for $75. One of his work colleagues offered to replace the brake pads for $50, making the new cost to replace $125. “Moral of the story is, yeah, I had to go outside of my realm, but $500 is a little ridiculous for brake pads,” he shares. Jon then speculates with humor why on earth the dealership quote was so high. “Maybe they were made with golden ceramics,” he jokes. Overall, this experience made Jon question the whole dealership experience when he was able to buy the pads for $75 and hire someone to install them for $50. What Should Brake Pads Cost? Spending over $500 for just the brake pads to be replaced seemed high to Jon, and that feeling was correct. It’s no surprise to hear about dealerships overcharging customers for service, but this one stands out. Considering how Jon shared the brake pads cost $75 at O’Reilly, this service upcharge was quite shocking. AAA shares that, on average, getting brake pads replaced can cost between $100 and $300 per axle. In Jon's case, the $500 quote for changing just the front axle was much higher than average. Generally speaking, getting just the brake pads can cost, on average, between $50 and $80, Advance Auto Parts reports. According to CarParts, new brake pads will cost anywhere from $8 to $230. This cost range includes sets being sold that include rotors and can be purchased in sets of two or four. The price will also vary depending on the vehicle and make. Brake pads are comparable to pencil erasers, and they will eventually run out of material to use. Every time the brake pads are used, the pads provide friction against the rotor to slow down the vehicle. The brake pad material will slowly wear down over time, eventually needing to be replaced. Driving on worn-down brake pads can be dangerous. If you ignore replacing them, brake pads can run out of material and can even crumble apart. If any squeaking, grinding noise, or vibration in the brake pedal occurs, these are signs that the brakes need to be replaced. Brake pads will usually wear out around 40,000 to 50,000 miles. While this number will depend on your driving habits and vehicle, it's advised to check the brake pads every six months, along with tire rotations. ‘Sad Thing Is A Lot Of People Would Have Said Ok’ Many of the commenters suggested skipping out on the dealership entirely and replacing the brake pads at home to save money. “I ordered brake pads and two front rotors online for $120.00, they came in and my husband changed them. It’s crazy how expensive these shops have gotten,” one TikTok commenter shared. “The more you can do for yourself the more you can save,” another added. “Never deal with a major car dealership,” a third added. While other viewers mentioned how shocking dealership pricing is getting. “Dealerships are getting outrageous,” one vents. “What’s really scary is a lot of dealerships will use the O'reilly or Napa pads and still charge you the $500 for the parts,” another added. “Sad thing is a lot of people would have said ok,” one commented. “Then they have the nerve to say the industry is struggling. This is part of the reason,” one shared. Motor1 has contacted Jon via TikTok direct message and commented on the post. We will update the story if he responds. We want your opinion!
