A man whose wife had taken her Cadillac to Mavis Discount Tire demanded a refund from the manager. He says that he eventually got it, but not without trying multiple times and being the target of profanity. TikTok creator @mainecoondadd posted a video venting about the situation last week. He explains, "Back in February, my wife brought her car into Mavis Discount Tire to have four brand new tires put on. While they had it on the lift, they said the sway bar link broke and we're going to have to replace that shoulder." The couple agreed to the repairs and got the car back. However, after driving it for a few weeks, he says his wife heard a "clunky" sound coming from the same side as the sway bar link repair. "So I call them up," he says. "The gentleman on the phone says, 'It can’t be [the sway bar link], but we’ll take a look at it.’ Lo and behold, it was that." Customer Demands Refund From Mavis Discount Tire The TikToker said Mavis agreed to put on a new sway bar link. "Now, this was two weeks ago," he says. "I pick up the car, drive it around, and the next day, we hear the clunky noise." He brought the car back to Mavis, he says, and was told it’s now a strut mount issue that would cost another $1,200 to fix. That’s when the TikToker decided to get a second opinion. "So I picked up the car, called a mechanic in my hometown ... told him what was going on," he says. "He took the car, drove it, [and] he said, 'I had a feeling it was the sway bar link, so I put it up on the lift, and I noticed they didn't tighten the sway bar link.'" That’s when the TikToker decided to call Mavis back and demand that they pay the $111 he had to pay the other mechanic for the diagnosis. "I called Mavis and said, 'You guys are going to have to reimburse me for this,’" he says. "The guy says, ‘Bring me a receipt and we’ll see what we can do.’" Well, the TikToker says he took the receipt the week before and hadn’t heard anything back. So, he went back the day he recorded the TikTok to confront the manager. "So I went in today, asked him, 'You guys gonna reimburse me or not?'" he says. When he didn’t get the response he wanted, the TikToker decided to go into the showroom and tell everyone waiting there what had happened to him. That’s when he says the manager came out with the $111 he was owed, handed it to the TikToker, and, using profanity, told him to leave the premises. "This is unreal that they screwed up and made it that hard to get the money that they owe us. [Then] curse at me for just wanting what they owe me," he wrote in the caption. Viewers React To The Mavis Discount Tire Saga In the video's comments section, viewers reacted to the man's story and recommended alternatives to chain tire shops. "Always support your local garage and mechanic," said one person. "Corporate big box sucks." "Only get tires from them," said a second person. "Nothing else." "I know the quality of service I bring to my store," said another person. "Mine is the highest rated shop in the area. Different peeps, different locations. It's really unfortunate to hear the story because that is extremely frustrating. But just throwing it out there, there are many great locations out there." The Mavis Discount Tire page on the Better Business Bureau features more than 1,500 complaints in the past three years. Two reviews on the page mention situations in which work was done incorrectly and the shop was unwilling to reimburse the customer. A Reddit user posted to r/AskaMechanic about a similar issue with a service that the customer later had to take to another mechanic to resolve.
