Ram and Dodge have been on a quest to bring back V8s to the line-up, and it's off to a great start. Last year, Ram gave the 1500 the 5.7-liter Hemi again, and Dodge brought back the Durango SRT Hellcat. This year, the roles are slightly reversed. Ram gets the supercharged Hellcat engine for the TRX, and Dodge is adding a naturally aspirated Hemi. That Hemi is the 392, which is a 6.4-liter engine in metric measurement, and it's again showing up in the Durango. It doesn't have an SRT badge anymore, but it still has all the SRT goodies. Durango SRT, Minus S, Plus /, Equals Durango R/T Yes, the 392 now comes in a Durango with the R/T badge, rather than SRT. This doesn't mean much, though, because mechanically and stylistically, it's the same SUV as before. It has the same front bumper, hood scoop, and body color fender flares. Those fender flares house 20-inch wheels with 295-mm wide tires. The only real difference from the outside is the switch to red badges proclaiming the displacement on the fenders.Dodge As for the interior, it's mostly the same as any Durango, but with a number of thoughtful upgrades. It has more heavily bolstered front seats, which are covered in Nappa leather and suede and come with heating and ventilation. The second-row seats are heated, too. Buyers can opt to add more leather and carbon fiber on the dash and door panels, suede on the headliner, and a sunroof.DodgeThe engine makes the same amount of power as before at 475 horsepower, as well as 470 pound-feet of torque. It all goes though an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It'll run to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and finish the quarter mile in 12.9. The top speed is 160 mph. All of those numbers, are, again, the same as they were when this was sold as the SRT 392.DodgeJust as before, the R/T 392 also gets some chassis upgrades. It has sportier springs matched with electronically adjustable shocks. The brakes feature Brembo calipers with six-piston units up front and 4-piston ones at the back. These can be further upgraded with two-piece rotors. At the back is also a standard electronic limited-slip differential. Also, for lack of a better place to discuss it, maximum towing capacity comes in at 8,700 pounds. Order Books Are Open Now Dodge is taking orders right now for the R/T 392. Exact delivery dates weren't given, but they'll likely be showing up at dealers soon. The base MSRP is $49,995, which comes to $51,990. That gets the Launch Edition, and for an extra $7,600, you can get the Launch Edition Premium that includes some of the aformentioned upgrades (sunroof, additional leather and carbon fiber, two-piece rotors) plus a Harmon Kardon sound system. Also noteworthy about the R/T's pricing is that it's nearly $5,000 less than its closest competitor, the Ford Explorer ST. The Ford starts at $56,700, which comes with less power, less torque, less tire, no rear limited-slip differential, and less towing capacitiy. So the R/T 392 makes for a solid deal on a hot SUV.Dodge
