Image: OpelThe GSE abbreviation has a long tradition at Opel: in the past, models such as the Commodore GS/E and Monza GSE used it to stand for ‘Grand Sport Einspritzung,’ while today it means ‘Grand Sport Electric.’ Following an initial revival with electrified plug-in hybrids such as the Astra GSe and Grandland GSe, Opel has now aligned its performance line exclusively around electric models. The Mokka GSE marked the beginning of this new phase last year, and as confirmed in February, the Corsa GSE now follows as an all-electric ‘hot hatch.’The high-performance Stellantis small cars share the e-CMP platform, drivetrain and battery technology. In the Corsa GSE, a permanent magnet synchronous motor on the front axle delivers 207 kW and 345 Nm of torque. The electric small car thus offers the same output figures as the Mokka GSE.The full 207 kW is available in Sport mode. Opel says the Corsa GSE uses a special ‘racetrack’-optimised calibration in this setting. In Normal mode, the drivetrain delivers 170 kW, although the top speed remains unchanged at 180 km/h. In Eco mode, Opel says output is reduced in favour of efficiency. Top speed in this mode is limited to 150 km/h.No current Opel production model accelerates fasterThe Corsa GSE is set to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. According to Opel, no other current production model from the brand accelerates faster. The Mokka GSE requires 5.9 seconds for the same sprint. However, the electric SUV remains ahead in terms of top speed: the Corsa GSE reaches 180 kph, while the Mokka GSE achieves 200 km/h. Final WLTP values for range and consumption are therefore not yet available. The battery specifications are already known: Opel cites a lithium-ion battery with an energy content of 54 kWh, of which 51 kWh should be usable. According to the manufacturer, the battery’s thermal management system has also been adapted to meet the higher demands of the GSE version.Opel also differentiates the GSE from the regular Corsa Electric in terms of chassis setup. The performance version receives front-wheel drive with a Torsen limited-slip differential, a lowered sports suspension, specially configured axles, stabilisers and hydro shock absorbers. Opel also adds GSE-specific steering and pedal tuning as well as four-piston performance brakes. The company is therefore following the same approach already introduced with the Mokka GSE. There, Opel also upgraded not only the power output, but also the suspension, steering, brakes and traction systems for a sportier setup.Opel gives the Corsa GSE a distinctive designVisually, Opel equips the Corsa GSE with a bespoke front and rear design. The model also features black trim elements in the lower body area, wider wheel arches, a black roof, a black rear spoiler and GSE lettering on the vehicle sides. The Corsa GSE rides on 18-inch wheels. Behind the three-spoke rims sit Alcon brake callipers featuring GSE branding. The interior also receives dedicated GSE equipment. Driver and front passenger sit on Alcantara performance seats with integrated headrests. Black, grey and yellow fabric inserts are intended to recall earlier sporty Corsa models. Additional features include yellow seat belts, an Alcantara steering wheel, Alcantara door inserts, yellow contrast stitching, aluminium sports pedals and specific trim elements.Special performance displays are also shown via the digital driver information display and the central 10-inch touchscreen. These include G-forces, acceleration figures and battery management data. Opel also lists heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a 180-degree reversing camera, keyless entry and start, as well as a bidirectional onboard charger with vehicle-to-load functionality.Opel has not yet announced pricing. The Stellantis brand has also not provided details on the exact start of orders. Opel has only stated that the ‘most powerful production Corsa of all time’ will arrive later this year and celebrate its trade fair premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October.stellantis.com
