Last month, Mitsubishi confirmed that it was going to build a large SUV once again. We believe that it will be called the Pajero, the name the Japanese automaker used on its full-sizer for decades until it was discontinued in 2021. If you don't remember calling it by that name, it was known as the Montero in the US. Pajero-Size Desperately Needed In Mitsubishi Lineup CarBuzz/Valnet Mitsubishi desperately needs more vehicles to sell, and so it looks like the Pajero/Montero is coming back. The CarBuzz spies have once again snapped photos of the new SUV as it undergoes testing. There's one twist, though; this is marked as a test vehicle for Bosch, not Mitsubishi directly. In automotive, Bosch is a parts supplier and not an automaker or even a contract assembly company like Magna. The company makes a massive range of systems for automakers, including advanced assist suites, electric motors and inverters, and nearly every other electronic part imaginable. That makes this a strong sign that the new model will have some Bosch tech onboard. Of course, the company also operates an expansive proving ground in Germany, and it could simply be helping out with testing.CarBuzz/Valnet Whatever the case, we can see a lot about the new Pajero. This is a boxy, upright SUV. It almost certainly has three rows, and it looks like it's a real body-on-frame people-mover. At one point, we thought it had a live rear axle, but that's more likely a trick of the image. If the shape looks familiar, it's probably because it's a close match for the Elevance concept revealed in Tokyo last October. The concept version had see-through doors, and while that was never going to make it to production, much of the vehicle's other design elements do. Mitsubishi has shown before it can bring a concept car to the road. Most notably, the current Outlander PHEV is almost identical to the Engelberg Tourer that previewed its own arrival.Elements like the head and taillights are clearly Mitsubishi designs. Its Dynamic Shield grille, and the tall taillights are unmistakable. But we're getting some Nissan in the multi-slat grille, and the tailgate. Are we just jumping to that because the two are in an alliance? It's possible. Will This Be A Nissan Underneath? CarBuzz/Valnet It's also likely that the Pajero and Nissan's Armada will share a platform. Our spies have hinted that it won't have a Nissan engine, though. Instead, it will offer a smaller four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to give it either range-extended or PHEV power. Inside the cabin, we can see a large two-screen array in front of the driver. It's a familiar layout, which puts the center screen and the digital dash into one bezel, giving the interior a cleaner, more functional appearance.Mitsubishi has previously confirmed that it will launch a new model in the US every year between now and 2030. That includes models in segments where Mitsubishi doesn't currently compete. Like the full-sized SUV segment, perhaps? One last clue comes from the trademark office. Mitsubishi has locked down the Montero name in the US once again. That's not a guarantee it plans to build one, but it's not exactly a firm 'no,' either.2027 Mitsubishi Pajero spy photo (4)
