At a packed event in San Francisco, California, Genesis unveiled its new flagship electric SUV, the GV90. The GV90 is a full-sized three-row SUV that is also offered in a fully loaded GV90 Neolun spec aimed at people who want to be driven rather than to drive. Disclaimer: the author’s travel and accommodations for this event were paid for by Genesis. “Today marks a landmark arrival for Genesis and for the future of luxury mobility. GV90 opens a new chapter for Genesis, building on our track record of bold innovation, elevated customer experiences, and an unwavering commitment to excellence,” José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, said in a prepared statement. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica At its core, the GV90 is built on Genesis’ second-generation Electric Mobility Prime (eMP) platform that’s exclusive for the GV90. It features a 123.5 kWh battery which Genesis’ own internal estimates pin at 316 miles of range per charge. It features front and rear motors with a combined 490 kW / 657 hp of power and 800 Nm / 590 lb-ft of torque. The power is laid down by the brand’s first application of both front and rear Electronic Limited Slip Differentials (E-LSD), which deliver the power in the most efficient way while also offering better performance in slippery conditions. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica The GV90 features 5 mm acoustic glass all around, which helps to dampen exterior noise by 3 decibels. That includes the glass overhead where the GV90’s “vision roof” provides an extra bit of ambience. If the sun is too intense, passengers have the option to turn down the sunshine at the touch of a button. The roof has an integrated Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) display technology that can make any of the six zones of the roof transform from clear to tinted at the touch of a button. To improve the safety of the vehicle, Genesis’ engineers developed a world’s first roof airbag that deploys in the event of an accident to protect the occupants. This is especially critical in the event of a rollover where occupants in SUVs are often forcibly ejected from the vehicle. This is one of the many ways Genesis is not only pushing the limits on safety to achieve a 5-star crash rating, but to develop new technologies that far exceed current best practices. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica Genesis opted for single-tube, dual-valve Electronic Control Suspension (ECS) to keep the rigid aluminum frame of the vehicle as stable as possible. The aluminum frame of the vehicle is reinforced with an integrated tubular roll cage to provide additional support for both safety and handling. A staggering 72% of the vehicle is aluminum, which mandated extra attention on all the the multimaterial joints. Genesis engineers turned to structural foam to fill in any voids in the frame that would otherwise allow for noise to propagate throughout the vehicle. Finally, high-strength steel was used in the sides of the vehicle to provide additional rigidity and strength. Steel was specifically chosen to reinforce the doors of the Neolun Arch Gate where the B-pillar has been structurally integrated into the doors themselves. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica Inside the GV90, a 25-inch heads-up display puts all the information for the driver right on the windshield so they don’t have to take their eyes off the road. That’s complemented by a sizable 23.6-in OLED screen with all of the navigation and media options you’ve come to expect underpinned by all the flexibility of Genesis’ skinned Android Automotive Operating System. When parked, the screen physically moves up vertically 90 mm / 3.5 inches, increasing the visible size 1.7x to let passengers drink in the infotainment. This seems like a great option while charging or if you simply need some time to chill after a long day at the office. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica The screen is complemented by an impressive array of 25 Bang & Olufsen speakers sprinkled throughout the car. They work together to deliver a 7.1.4 channel Dolby Atmos experience that just might be better than what you have installed in your living room. Indeed, automakers seem to have an eye towards the fully autonomous future where we can all just kick back in massaging recliners, streaming the latest hit directly from Netflix in 8K as we zoom on down the highway. A True Executive Experience Genesis is offering the GV90 in a high-end executive trim called the GV90 Neolun. The base GV90 can be configured as a 5, 6, or 7 seater, but the Neolun will only be available as a 4 seat configuration. The twin rear seats are backed by an extra layer of sound-dampening material and a layer of privacy glass behind them that serves to keep noise from the rear cargo area out of the main cabin. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica Because the B-pillar is not fixed to the frame of the vehicle, the strength of the rest of the frame is critical not only to keep the passengers safe, but to support what has to be the most outrageous feature of the new GV90 Neolun: the world’s first motorized suicide doors. Genesis calls it the Neolun Arch Gate, bragging that it is the world’s first independently opening and closing hidden B-pillar coach door. It’s an impressive looking feature and one can only imagine what that would feel like if you’re arriving to or leaving an event, with a pair of automatic doors opening to usher you in and out of the vehicle. The Neolun build of the vehicle is so over the top, it’s clear Genesis was really swinging for the fences, pulling out all the stops to make this the ultimate executive coach. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica With both doors open, you might even catch a glimpse of the optional wooden flooring with integrated heating. This is a nod to Korean “ondol” flooring which used the kitchen fire to heat up stone floors in the home. Thankfully, the floors in the GV90 Neolun aren’t made of stone and are not heated with a wood fire, but it is a nice touch just the same. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica The front seats in the GV90 Neolun are motorized and can rotate around to face the rear of the vehicle when parked. Along with the Neolun Arch Gate, this creates the feel of a space that sits somewhere between first class seats on an airplane and a posh living room. This was done to create a more social environment, allowing for socializing while charging or simply to have business discussions when parked. Outside, the Neolun stands apart with its 24″ wheels and tires with two-tone paint that can be as subtle or wild as desired. Startup sequence: crystal rotates, revealing tweeters, shift stalk rotates from 12 to 2. Charging The Genesis GV90’s 123.5 kWh nickel-based battery will be able to pull down 350 kW of power, and we’re eager to see what the charging curve looks like out in the wild. We asked about vehicle-to-grid capability, and that’s not something the brand was ready to share details about just yet. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica The GV90 will come with the NACS port for North American customers and includes a well packaged level 1 home charger as well. It fits in the frunk, but don’t expect to put much else in the unfortunately undersized frunk. Image credit: Kyle Field, CleanTechnica Overall Genesis really is pulling out all of the tricks in its playbook to deliver the ultimate executive coach experience in the GV90 Neolun, and the base GV90 is no slouch either. It sets an entirely new high bar for the brand, with features that will surely pull new buyers into the fold as a halo vehicle. They’re even taking it one step further with a GV90 Neolun First Edition that has more gadgets and gizmos to satisfy even the most pampered owners with a limited run when it launches for model year 2028. Pricing is yet to be disclosed, but we’re expecting it to start around $90,000–100,000, with the higher end trims pushing up over $150,000. It’s honestly about as premium as anything you could expect to find in a Maybach, Rolls-Royce, or Bentley, but this luxe creation is coming to you courtesy of Genesis in the form of the GV90 Neolun First Edition. Color us impressed. Genesis really is pushing to make a splash with the GV90 in all of its variants and we can’t wait to see how they perform when they start rolling off the production lines out into the world.
