The use of HOV lanes would require at least two occupants, regardless of the type of car you drive.
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — For years, electric vehicle (EV) drivers in Arizona have been allowed to use the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane solo, but that will change later this year.
Key parts of the federal code that permit alternative fuel cars to access the HOV lane are set to expire on September 30.
Starting October 1, all vehicles will be required to have at least two occupants to use the HOV lanes during peak hours, regardless of the type of car. This law, enacted in 2005, was designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Congress could extend the deadline or approve new legislation to make the perk permanent.
