Nissan has made some phenomenal engines over the years. One of its most popular engines that has been around for a while now is the VQ38DD that can be found in everything from family SUVs to pickup trucks, earning a reputation for being one of those engines that just keeps going. This V6 engine is the kind of engine many owners trust to rack up hundreds of thousands of miles without turning into a giant headache. That is why one recent teardown of Nissan’s newer 3.8-liter V6 has people paying attention, because what was hiding inside this engine was not what anyone expected. One Tiny Part Caused A Huge Disaster The engine came out of a fairly new Nissan Frontier pickup with around 120,000 miles. That sounds like a lot, but for a modern truck engine, it should not be enough to completely destroy it.At first, everything looked normal from the outside. But once the engine was opened up, there was thick, milky sludge everywhere. Oil and coolant had mixed together inside the engine, turning what should have been clean lubrication into something that looked more like a milkshake. Then the real problem showed up. A small water pump buried deep inside the engine had completely fallen apart. Instead of simply leaking, the pump started grinding itself into the engine block. That sent coolant where it should never go, ruined the bearings, and slowly turned the entire engine into junk. The Worst Part Is Nissan Made It Harder To Fix Here is where things get frustrating. The older version of Nissan’s V6 had a much smarter setup. If the water pump went bad, a mechanic could get to it without tearing half the engine apart. It was still not cheap, but it was manageable. With the newer engine, Nissan removed that easy access. Now, replacing the same water pump can take hours of work and can become a wallet-crushing experience. And if the pump fails badly enough, like it did in this video, owners might not just need a new pump. They could need a whole new engine. Why Nissan Owners Might Start To Worry NissanNow, it's important to note that one broken engine does not automatically mean every Nissan Frontier is doomed. But what makes this discovery so surprising is that Nissan’s V6 has always been known as one of the company’s safer engines, and seeing such a small part create such a massive failure, almost feels a bit like finding out that your favorite superhero has a weakness nobody knew about. And because this newer engine has only been around for a few years, some owners are now wondering if more of these failures could show up as trucks get older. It Is Still Too Early To Call Every Frontier A Problem NissanAs dramatic as this teardown was, there is one important thing worth keeping in mind before anyone writes off every newer Frontier. This was just one engine. The person who tore it down even admitted that seeing one failure does not automatically mean every Nissan 3.8-liter V6 is headed for the same fate. Engines that end up in salvage yards usually represent the worst-case scenarios, not the average ownership experience. Many Frontier owners may never deal with this issue at all. There is also the possibility that poor maintenance made this failure worse than it should have been. The inside of the engine showed signs that it may not have always received the care it needed, and once coolant started mixing with the oil, the damage snowballed quickly. In some cases, catching a failing water pump early could prevent the kind of total destruction seen here. That does not erase the concern over Nissan making the repair harder and more expensive than before, but it does mean this should be viewed as a warning sign rather than proof of a widespread disaster. For now, the newer Frontier’s V6 may still be a solid engine, but this teardown shows it has one weakness owners may want to keep an eye on.
