A car salesman says a customer drove two hours to buy a vehicle from his dealership, got approved for financing, and then tried to pay her $432 down payment with an EBT card. What followed was an impromptu lesson on the street value of food stamps, delivered in a high-octane rant with Erik Satie’s "Gymnopedie" playing incongruously in the background. Rob the Car Guy (@robbthecarguy), whose channel for his car sales business has attracted a big TikTok following, recently posted a one-minute, 39-second TikTok that has drawn more than 660,000 views. Customer Requests Alternative Down Payment Options: ‘I’ll Take Anything You Got’ According to Rob, the deal started normally. The customer submitted a credit application, got approved, and made the trip to the dealership to sign paperwork. "The down payment is $432. That’s all you needed," he says in the video. "We get everybody approved. It ain’t no thing." But when the moment arrived to pay up, the customer began stalling. "She going through her bag and looking in; oh man, making up all these excuses. ‘Oh my God, I left my wallet in the Uber.' 'The Uber don’t answer,’" Rob recounts. "And then she pretended to be on the phone for like an hour with Uber." Rob says he offered every digital payment option he could. "We take Zelle; we take Cash App; we take Apple Pay; we take Venmo; we take PayPal," he says. "I’ll take anything you got." That’s when the customer pulled out her EBT card. ‘50 Cent On The Dollar, Sweetheart’ When the customer asked whether Rob would accept food stamps, he didn’t miss a beat. "It’s 50 cent on the dollar, sweetheart, if I’m cashing you out," he says. "So we’re going to go to Walmart; you’re going to swipe for $430. I’m about $430 with the groceries. And I’m going to give you $215, straight like that; you still owe me." The customer balked. "It’s dollar for dollar." Rob shot back, "Inflation." Rob explained why the timing didn’t work in the customer’s favor. "I don’t even know what to do with $400 worth of groceries right now. My kids don’t come until Friday," he says. "If you would have caught me on Friday, maybe. I would have gave you 75 cent on the dollar. But it’s Monday. Fifty cent on the dollar." He added, "Supply and demand. And right now, you got the supply with a limited demand." EBT Benefits Aren’t Meant To Buy Cars It’s worth remembering that exchanging SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits for cash or non-food items is a federal crime under the Food and Nutrition Act. SNAP recipients who traffic their benefits can face disqualification from the program, fines, and up to five years in prison for amounts over $100, according to the USDA’s enforcement guidelines. Some commenters flagged the risk. "That’s a felony. Don’t ask how I learned that," wrote Couch_Rock. La 8va maravilla offered friendly advice: "Broo do not play with this you make very good content you a very nice guy but don’t play the feds they don’t play bro." ‘That’s In The Constitution’ It’s unclear to what extent Rob’s story accurately describes a real transaction and how much it is played for laughs, but the comments section treated it as an opportunity to debate the customary exchange rate for food stamps. The overwhelming consensus among commenters was that Rob had the exchange rate right. "It’s always been .50 on the dollar," wrote justinsaucedo100 in the top comment. D.A.R.Y.L.2.0 added, "Always been $50 for $100. That’s in the constitution." Others shared regional variations. "In chi .70," wrote IceCreamMod. Kelly Dean explained, "Depends on where you at bcuz when I stayed in Arkansas they [paid] 40 for a book of stamps." The customer’s dollar-for-dollar offer provoked widespread disbelief. "What’s the point of paying 1.00 for 1.00. I might as well spend my money," wrote Double A. The Philthy macc agreed: "Never in my life will I pay dollar for dollar that makes zero sense I’ll just spend my money." Rob’s line about his kids not arriving until Friday became its own meme in the comments section. "Idek what to do with $400 of groceries.. my kids don’t come till Friday," quoted Xp__venom, adding multiple crying-laughing emojis. Good JUJU 626 wrote, "He finna eat them kids snacks up." SmooveFlightJET was already planning a shopping spree. "When you said $432, I immediately bought brisket, lobster, crab legs (king of course) for $864," they wrote. Gravydreams offered some historical context, writing "My dad used to take food stamps as payment at the junkyard back in the 80s and it was 50 cents on the dollar back then."
