2024 VW ID.4An issue with certain batteries can cause a fire while charging above 80%, according to a recall notice.Volkswagen is recalling 22,524 ID.4s over the potential for battery fires, according to recall documents filed this month with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.Until it comes up with a fix for the issue, VW is urging owners to not charge their car past 80%, as it says incidents can happen above that state of charge. VW estimates that 0.1% of the recalled cars, which include 2023-2026 models, are actually affected."The root cause is unknown, however in certain high-voltage batteries within the affected vehiclepopulation, certain charging profiles combined with a state of charge over 80% may trigger thermal propagation within the high-voltage battery," VW said in a filing.Volkswagen says it still isn't sure exactly what is happening to the batteries, which are supplied by SK. It made the call to issue a recall on September 23, 2026, after 22 different instances from U.S. customers that occurred between January 18, 2024 and August 7, 2026.2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S. ReviewWhile no permanent solution is available, VW does have a couple of temporary ones. The first one is simple: Post-It notes. OK, so not exactly Post-Its, but warning stickers to be placed in certain areas of the car to remind owners not to charge past 80%. I imagine they'll be on the dashboard and under the charge port flap. VW also said that "Depending on the vehicle configuration and online connectivity, some vehicles may be configured to limit the maximum state of charge of the high-voltage battery to 80 percent," suggesting an over-the-air update may be in the cards.More Of The Latest EV NewsNissan's New Plug-In Hybrid Pickup Is Part Of A Much Bigger China TrendRivian R2's Ventilated Seats Just Got Downgraded.
