It’s hard to keep track of what’s going on in the US electric vehicle market. Several automakers have stopped producing EVs or pulled EV models off the market, while others are in a kind of limbo state. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz is one of those models that has been in a kind of limbo zone. The 2026 model year VW ID. Buzz for the US market was dropped several months ago, with production of the vehicle paused. But it was not canceled. An upgraded 2027 model has been in the works, and the company is planning to resume production of the vehicle in 2026 once that’s ready. Yay! This was confirmed by Volkswagen Group of America president and CEO Kjell Gruner. “The ID Buzz remains an important part of the Volkswagen portfolio,” Gruner told Motor Trend in December, “and I want to be clear: We are not canceling this product in the US market. To optimize inventory, we’re leveraging 2025 models to support our dealers through mid-year, and we’re excited to welcome model year 2027 in 2026.” So, basically, there wasn’t enough consumer demand to keep producing the Buzz, but the company was working on a more compelling update that should sell better (hopefully). Well, the 2027 ID. Buzz is almost on the way. Unfortunately, though, Volkswagen doesn’t seem super proud of its work and practically buried the news. “There wasn’t some big, fancy rollout or even a dedicated press release for the triumphant return of Volkswagen’s flagship after taking a gap year,” Jalopnik summarizes. “Hell, it didn’t even get top billing on the press release it shared with the rest of VW’s 2027 lineup. That honor went to the new Atlas, but don’t worry. The ID Buzz was second. There aren’t even any pictures of the 2027 ID Buzz on the release. All four of the photos Volkswagen decided to include are of a 2025 Buzz tarted up with 2027 Tourer accessories and other aftermarket bits. It’s a bizarre sight to see, I’ll tell you that much.” Basically, the 2027 ID. Buzz comes with some new trims that include some fancy features. “The big news here is the addition of the Pro S 4Motion and Tourer 4Motion trim levels. The former is just the base trim van with all-wheel drive, but the latter is a tad more interesting. “It’s based on the European ‘Good Night Package,’ and it includes a fold-out mattress with a platform, window blinds, front window ventilation panels, and a table and chairs set that go outside the van. It also has an Overnight Mode built into the software that’ll adapt the interior and exterior functionality to make the ID Buzz a little bit better to sleep in. VW doesn’t go into specifics as to what sort of things change, so I guess we’ll have to see. I still cannot imagine it would be good, but it’ll be better, I suppose. The Tourer 4Motion will be built off the Pro S 4 Motion, and it’ll get other niceties like a retractable tow hitch, captain’s chairs, an electrochromic panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera and 20-inch wheels.” Cool. Though, the improvement that I think is really a big deal is that Volkswagen has added true one-pedal driving as an option. (And who wouldn’t want that?) The Buzz is also expected to come at a significantly lower price. Let’s hope the price really does drop a ton.
