As Land Rover finally gets moving on bringing a new generation of its SUVs to market, the CarBuzz spies are snapping them more and more. Each time they're spotted, it's a chance for some new details to slip, and that's exactly what has happened this time. The Range Rover Velar EV looks the same outside as it did the last time, but this time we have a look at the interior. It's our first look inside this new electric Rover. New Cabin Gets A Big Screen, But No Buttons CarBuzz/Valnet We'll get back to the exterior, but first, the cabin. Snapped with most of its coverings out of the way, we can see plenty about the newest JLR operating system and the design of the dashboard and controls.Land Rover is going exceptionally square inside this new model; just look at the gear selector and wiper stalks on the steering column. They look almost like folded paper rather than plastic. It's an extremely retro design, but not in the way a vintage Land Rover would have looked.CarBuzz/Valnet The steering wheel is also very square. The cover over the top is clearly meant to throw us off, but we can see the multi-purpose buttons for audio and dash display controls. Keeping up the theme, the dashboard vents seem to run side to side behind the center screen. The full-width slats don't exactly scream luxury vehicle to us, though.A large center screen and high-mount digital dash replace the smaller screen and tiny dash of the current Velar. Together with the vents and square controls, the Velar looks a lot like one of Hyundai's new Pleos infotainment system implementations. The question will be if it runs like a Hyundai system or a typical Land Rover when it enters production. You might notice that below the screen there are zero buttons. Or at least there aren't any vehicle control buttons, just the big red safety buttons that every prototype gets. The lack of physical controls has us really hoping the infotainment system will be a good one. At least it has four different versions of English! Will This Be A Fastback SUV? CarBuzz/Valnet Now back to the outside, where we're really not sure what JLR's stylists are doing. The next-generation Velar will keep its chin-forward design at the front, but behind the rear seats things get very strange. This is an SUV with a fastback rear. That includes a hatch that opens up all the way to right behind the rear seats. When you open that hatch, it's going to be absolutely massive. The struts will no doubt be working overtime. Land Rover appears to be hiding just how sleek-looking it is, too, because the covering over the hatch is panels aligned to hide the actual body lines. Just look at the angle of the small piece of the rear glass you can see. There's nothing new on the powertrain front. This is expected to use the new 800-volt electrical system and platform that JLR has been developing. The company is behind schedule on these, with at least part of the blame on the company's cyberattack last year.Electric vehicle demand is also down just a bit from earlier last year, at least in the US. Still, we expect that JLR will be able to debut this new Velar later this year. Though the gas one might live on beside it for a while as well, similar to what Porsche is currently scrambling to do.Range Rover Velar 6
