The Rivian R1T and R1S electric truck and SUV are made for the off-road experience.RivianU.S. News & World Report has determined the best vehicles for adventure. The consumer rankings authority announced this week its first Best Adventure Vehicles awards in three overall categories: Camping, Road Trips and Off-Roading. An all-electric option won for each category.“Electric makes sense in the time of high gas prices, John Vincent, U.S. News senior editor, vehicle testing, said in a phone call, “There are some incredibly capable EVs.”AdvertisementAdvertisementIt’s fitting (and somewhat reassuring) that the car brand Rivian with the phrase "Adventure Network" in its charging system’s name easily won both electric categories (SUV and truck) for off-roading. In February the EV company launched the “Rivian Adventure Department” to highlight how much the R1T truck and R1S SUV could do in an aptly named marketing push.Vincent pointed out that Rivian has “cool features for being in the outdoors” like the R1T gear tunnel and Rivian-made camping kitchen add-on. For off-roading, Rivian handily won as the best option for approach and departure angles to avoid scraping the vehicle itself. It also protects the battery pack that sits low along the car floor.Rivian is known for its off-road performance and customization on its EVs, which start at just under $77,000 for the R1S and $73,000 for the R1T. A forthcoming smaller SUV, the R2, will start just under $50,000 when it arrives next month.Vincent said the Rivian EVs came in close to the GMC Hummer EV based the research data, but ultimately, “The Rivians are a vehicle you more want to live with.” For a consumer-focused publication, U.S. News wanted to make sure the adventure picks matched what people are buying as a multi-purpose vehicle. “We know that people are using these vehicles [for off-roading] for 10 days a year and need something for the rest of the year.”AdvertisementAdvertisement“We don’t buy the car for what we need it to do everyday,” he added. The 2026 Rivian R1T handles off-road courses well while protecting the electric truck's battery pack.RivianOther EVs beat out the Rivians for road-tripping and camping: the 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 for SUV and 2026 GMC Sierra EV for truck. The Hyundai Ioniq 9 pushed past the R1S for best SUV for camping and road trips mainly because of interior space, especially when it comes to car camping with the seats folded down. The Ioniq 9 offers 163.54 cubic-feet of total passenger interior volume while the R1S is 104.7 cubes. The Ioniq 9 starts at just under $60,000.The full list of 2026 Best Adventure Vehicles includes trucks, SUVs, hybrids, plug-ins and EVs.This article was originally published on Forbes.com
