Rivian Recalls 14 R2s For Battery Fastener IssueRivianThe 2027 Rivian R2 has made it into the hands of many eager buyers since deliveries started earlier this year, but it's also already had a couple of small recall-related hiccups, the second of which was recently filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and published on Rivian's own recall center site. This recall, following a previous issue with the rearview backup camera, is much more serious, but affects very few R2s. Rivian is recalling 14 R2s because they "may have an improperly torqued fastener connected to the high-voltage battery." Specifically, the automaker says the culprit is an HV battery busbar fastener. The busbar connects cells and modules across the battery pack, ensuring consistent voltage.Predictably, Rivian states the risk here is that "the vehicle may experience a loss of motive power without prior warning." The recall population of vehicles includes R2s built between May 18 and August 27. There were plenty more R2s built in that timespan, but Rivian believes only 14 of them are at risk.RivianThe defect was discovered on September 17 when a manufacturing operator identified an under-torqued fastener that was torqued at an automated station. Rivian says the station has since been reprogrammed to reject improperly torqued fasteners. A one-week investigation into the issue revealed manufacturing records showing only the 14 R2s being recalled could have improperly torqued fasteners. Once the investigation was complete, Rivian decided to conduct its safety recall.Thankfully, there are no accidents, injuries, or fatalities reported as a result of this issue. Additionally, Rivian says it's received no customer reports related to the issue. The remedy is simple, according to Rivian's recall notice. Its service centers will "inspect and repair the connection on the potentially affected vehicles or replace the damaged components." The new bolt will, of course, be a properly torqued fastener, and all work will be completed free of charge. Additionally, TechCrunch reports that all of the 14 affected vehicles are already at service centers, per a note from Rivian. If You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
