Where BMW M failed, can Mercedes-Benz succeed? The performance team from Affalterbach is definitely going to try, and this is the vehicle that will do it. The AMG GT SUV has just been spotted up close and personal. The CarBuzz spies have delivered us more details about the appearance of AMG's first SUV, along with a very good look at the cabin. It looks like we're going to get a repeat of the AMG GT 4-Door, but with a lot more headroom. Stand-Alone AMG SUV Looks The Business CarBuzz/Valnet We've seen the outside of the AMG GT SUV before. AMG's answer to the BMW XM doesn't seem quite as controversially-styled as its Bavarian counterpart, but there's still plenty to see under that wrap before we're sure. The upright and cab-rearward shape reminds us of the older Infiniti FX/EX crossover, but with more Mercedes-Benz detailing in the lights at both ends.Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz revealed images showing the interior of the new AMG GT 4-Door, the sedan equivalent to this new SUV. From what we can see in these images, the two will be nearly identical. The SUV shows similar front buckets with fixed headrests and faux harness slots. It also has a shockingly tall center console that has the same dials for Response Control, Agility Control, and Traction Control beside the cupholders as the 4-Door. And the same line of buttons just to the rear of the wireless phone charge pads.CarBuzz/Valnet We can even see that the screens are the same. A 10.2-inch digital dash and 14.0-inch center screen dominate the front of the cabin. The GT 4-Door was shown with a third screen, another 14.0-inch unit, for the passenger and the SUV will probably get one of those, too.Recent Benz models have combined all of their many and massive screens under one bezel, giving them a seamless appearance. This one, and the 4-Door, have the screens mounted separately. The center display is heavily angled toward the driver, which gives it a more focused feel. It's not made for cruising and easy radio station changes, it's made for showing you what you need when you're going quickly. At least that's the image AMG wants to present. Up To 1,341 Horsepower Is Possible CarBuzz/Valnet We expect that the GT SUV will share power with the 4-Door. That, based on the Concept GT XX, means three axial-flux motors from subsidiary YASA. The motors could make up to 1,341 horsepower like the concept, but will almost certainly be above 1,000.Considering the massive power, we're surprised by what appear to be very small brakes. Yes, they live in 21-inch wheels on this test car (and those are production-spec wheels), but there is plenty of air around them. They aren't drilled like we're used to on AMG models either, which might not be necessary with the regenerative braking capabilities of the 800-volt electrical system. The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV won't be alone on the market, even though the poor-selling BMW XM is a PHEV. Porsche has its Cayenne Electric with 1,000 horsepower on the way to make sure there's a choice of ultra-high-performance electric SUVs.We still aren't sure when Mercedes-AMG will reveal the SUV, but we don't think it will be long. A presentation is likely in the second half of this year, with production in early 2027.MB AMG SUV EV 9
