After years of car troubles and a voluntary repossession that tanked her credit, one woman took a chance on buying her next vehicle through Carvana. She says the experience blew traditional dealerships out of the water. Should you consider buying a car online instead of a dealership? TikTok creator Vanessa (@comac3) recently shared her experience purchasing a 2022 Volkswagen Taos through Carvana and explained why she preferred it to traditional dealerships, despite having worked at one herself. "So I just bought a car from Carvana a week ago, and I just wanted to, like, give a little review in case anybody was wondering what the experience is like," she begins. Vanessa's car-buying journey started with significant challenges. About seven or eight years ago, she bought a vehicle that turned into a money pit. "When I bought it, it had a bunch of problems. We kept having problems. Like, thousands. Like, $15,000 I had to pay to get this car fixed over the years," she explains. Two years ago, the engine failed. Still owing money on the vehicle, she made a tough call. "I said, I'm not paying anything else on this car. Told them to come get it, and they did. And I got a voluntary repo. Because of that, my credit was crap," she says. For two years, Vanessa shared a car with her son. But when he moved away for a job, she needed her own vehicle again. She started monitoring Carvana about a year earlier to see how her damaged credit would affect her options. Initially, the required down payment was around $1,600. By August, it had dropped significantly. Then, a few weeks ago when she was ready to buy, something unexpected happened. "Guess what? No down payment. What?" she shares. The entire process was conducted online, which she found refreshingly simple compared to dealership experiences. "It was the easiest process ever. I had it delivered, so I haven't paid anything yet. Registration's been taken care of. I had seven days to decide whether or not I wanted to keep it, and I had three returns. So if something was wrong with it, didn't like it, I could switch it out up to three times," she explains. The vehicle came with a 100-day extended warranty on powertrain and electrical issues through Carvana, separate from any optional extended warranty she could purchase. What stood out most to her was the lack of negotiation stress. "I had no hassles of dealing with a salesperson trying to toy with me on numbers. It was what it was. It is what it is," she says. When the car arrived via free delivery, the driver conducted a walk-around, explained features, reviewed her contract, and had her sign the remaining paperwork she hadn't completed online. "I don't know a dealership that you can go to and have a car for seven days and then return it. You drive off that lot and your paperwork's signed. You are done, baby. If something ain't right, well, better hope your warranty covers it or they'll do a trade in. Totally different," she points out. She particularly appreciated the extensive online inventory with detailed filtering options for year, make, model, mileage, cost, down payment, and specific features. The morning after her video, the finance company called to welcome her, check if she had any issues, answer questions, and explain payment details. "I've never gotten that from a car dealership. I used to work in a car dealership. Carvana all day long. Great experience. Can't complain. 10 stars," she concludes. In her caption, she emphasizes, "All of this is online btw! @Carvana great experience definitely recommend!" How Carvana Compares to Traditional Dealerships The rise of online car-buying platforms like Carvana has fundamentally changed how Americans purchase vehicles. According to Noble Quote, traditional dealerships still dominate the market with hands-on experiences including in-person test drives, on-the-spot financing, and face-to-face negotiation. But dealership visits come with their own challenges: lengthy wait times, price negotiation stress, and aggressive sales tactics that drive many consumers toward online options. CoPilot notes that Carvana has a clear advantage in inventory volume and quality control, offering thousands of used vehicles that undergo stringent inspection processes. However, the used-car dealership market has a mixed reputation, with some dealerships offering questionable warranties and low-quality inventory. The Trade-Offs of Online vs. In-Person Buying Online platforms do have limitations. AmeriFreight points out that Carvana's no-haggle pricing means you pay the listed price without negotiation opportunities—which some see as a pro and others as a con. Dealerships allow price negotiation, potentially saving thousands, though this requires effort and negotiating skills. Carvana only sells used vehicles, so buyers seeking new cars must look elsewhere. Municibid notes that while Carvana offers more than 25,000 cars online with makes and models unavailable locally, buyers face wait times for delivery. Some customers have experienced delivery delays of up to three weeks. Traditional dealerships let you drive off the lot the same day. They also provide in-house repair and maintenance services, while Carvana relies on third-party repair shops. The choice ultimately depends on personal priorities. If you value convenience, transparency, and pressure-free shopping, online platforms like Carvana may appeal to you. If you prefer seeing cars in person, test driving before buying, and establishing personal relationships with local dealers, traditional dealerships may be the better option. People weighed in on Vanessa’s post to add praise for Carvana. “Sounds so much easier. idk why the dealerships just play games,” a top comment reads. “I’m so glad to see this video! Carvana is the only one that approved my husband. We are trying to fix our credit; he needs a car and dealerships wouldn't approve. I was so worried after all the negative things I've read/heard. So hopefully it goes smooth for us too,” a person said. “I bought from them during the pandemic and it was a great experience,” another wrote.
