A Ford dealership manager says he discovered something wrong with the moonroof on a 2026 Ford Explorer. In a TikTok that’s generated over 7,100 views as of this writing, Missy (@missy.the.manager) reveals why the new design choice for the new 2026 Ford Explorer moonroof left her with questions. Missy writes in the caption, "2026 Explorer no longer has a glass roof that opens. It’s fixed glass now." "Explorer ST, but guess what, the moonroof doesn’t open," she continues, adding, "It’s just a fixed piece of glass now. There are no controls to open the glass." She did note that there is still a shade cover inside for privacy or sun protection. "The glass doesn’t open anymore. That’s on all 2026 Explorers," she concludes. How Do People Feel About the New Moonroof? Most viewers agree with Missy. "That’s a deal breaker for me. I won’t own a vehicle without a sunroof. A shame Mustangs haven’t had them for a while," one said. "Nope.. deal breaker! Pass," another shared. "Test drove one last week this is the only reason I didn’t buy it," a third agreed. Others suggested the Ford Explorer shouldn't even have a moonroof. "We have a sunroof complete waste of money we never use it," one commented. "Good that moonroof had a bunch of problems," another added. Has Ford Had Issues With Moonroofs? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Ford recalled nearly 175,000 vehicles in October due to issues with the moonroof. The recalled models include the 2021–2023 Ford F-150; 2022 F-250, F-350, and F-450; and 2021–2022 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator. Ford reports this recall was due to the panoramic roof glass panel not being properly bonded to the vehicle. This improper bond can lead to water leaks, wind noise, and, in the worst cases, the glass separating entirely from the vehicle. "The moonroof wind deflector clips may be inadequately attached to the moonroof frame, which can result in the wind deflector detaching from the vehicle," per NHTSA. If the moonroof were to completely separate from the car, the risk of injury and crashes would certainly increase. Part of the recall included Ford reinstalling the moonroof. This entails the Ford technicians removing, cleaning, and reinstalling the vehicles’ panoramic roof glass panels free of charge for parts and labor.
