Fuel efficient vehicles have become even more important in recent years, especially as environmental concerns and fuel prices have come under the spotlight.With this in mind, we researched which cars on sale today are the most fuel efficient, or in this case energy efficient. That’s because every single one of the cars on our list is an Electric Vehicle (EV). To accurately compare efficiency between gas and electric vehicles, fueleconomy.gov developed a formula where EV fuel economy is given in Miles Per Gallon equivalent (MPGe), where 33.7 kWh = 1 gallon of gasoline. Public DC Fast Charging (like Tesla Superchargers or Electrify America) currently averages $0.40–$0.55 per kWh. If you charge exclusively in public, your annual fuel cost for a Tesla Model 3 would jump to roughly $1,320, almost erasing the savings compared to a 50 MPG hybrid. Beyond electricity use, EVs can save you on average $400–$600 per year in maintenance (no oil changes, fewer brake pad replacements due to regenerative braking). So, while EVs are the fuel efficiency champions, they are at their best when used for frequent short trips and you are able to regularly charge them at home. If you regularly undertake long road trips, then a hybrid or gas-powered vehicle may still make sense, but be sure to check the depreciation stats for your vehicle as well for a more comprehensive overview of overall running costs.
