Building out a custom camper van sounds like the ultimate dream. The reality? It is a series of brutal spatial puzzles and endless dust. I have spent years traveling the world out of backpacks and standard rental cars, but I finally decided it was time to build a proper mobile basecamp. A rolling studio that can carry all my camera gear, drone cases, and editing setups deep into the backcountry. The project is moving fast, and we just hit a massive milestone. In the latest video, "Gardening with my dude @garyduck #duck #gardening #cuteanimals.mp4", you can see the skeleton of the layout finally taking shape. Getting everything to fit into a few dozen square feet requires military precision. The Ultimate Space-Saving PuzzleEvery square inch matters when you are building a home on wheels. One of our smartest design choices so far is the custom wheel well water tank. It wraps perfectly over the rear wheel arch, turning an awkward, unusable bump into a massive reservoir for off-grid living.AdvertisementAdvertisementWe also spent the last few days constructing the wooden framing for the main kitchen galley and the seating bench. Seeing the raw plywood structures sitting on the newly laid laminate flooring makes the whole project feel real. This specific layout is designed around workflow. I mapped out a dedicated spot for a slide-out fridge, a compact oven, and a deep sink to wash off mud and grit after long days of shooting in the elements.Bringing the Vision to LifeThe hardest part of a DIY van build is trusting the process. When you are surrounded by exposed insulation, dangling wires, and raw timber, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. But stepping back and looking at the layout from the rear doors changes everything. The ceiling planks are secured, the main cabinets are fitted, and you can finally visualize the path from the living area to the front cab. It is a long way from a hollow metal shell. The vision is coming together.
