Hyundai has confirmed that the Ioniq 3 is set to debut in two months’ time at the Milan Design Week, and the electric hatchback will be the first in a queue of five electrified models that the brand will introduce to Europe over the coming 18 months, reported Autocar. Previewed by the Concept Three that was shown in September last year, the Ioniq 3 will be a close relation of the Kia EV4, underpinned by the group’s 400-volt E-GMP architecture and therefore its powertrains and battery selection. In the Kia EV4, this gets battery capacity of up to 81.4 kWh, for up to 630 km of range on the WLTP standard. The Hyundai Concept Three (pictured) previews the upcoming Ioniq 3 A further four models set to emerge from the Korean brand include a taller, crossover version of the Ioniq 3, a second-generation Bayon crossover, an updated i30 hatchback and the next-generation Tucson SUV, according to Autocar. All of these upcoming models from Hyundai would be hybrid-only in Hyundai’s plans. “We’re betting on hybrids and EVs for the next few years,” Hyundai Motor Europe CEO Xavier Martinet told the publication. The scale and scope of the Hyundai Motor Group, as well as its affiliates across a range of industries including robotics, software, construction, electronics and engineering, gives the automaker a vertical-integration advantage, which means that it can make decisions more quickly and more efficiently respond to changes in key global markets, he said. The agility is key, because we know there are geopolitical uncertainties and regulation is changing, so we need to be able to have this agility,” Martinet said. “Electrification is the word of the day, but which electrification, and at which speed? That’s the big question. We don’t control the speed at which the market is going towards EVs and which markets are going towards EVs, so we’re trying to be very strong in everything, which means hybrids and EVs,” he added. With regard to the Ioniq 3, this will be built alongside the petrol-powered i20 in Turkey, citing the production arrangement as how Hyundai is “trying to get the best of both worlds”. “We have the flexibility to ramp one up and ramp one down, depending on what the market is asking for,” Martinet said.
