Hyundai has unveiled two all-electric concept vehicles developed specifically for the Chinese market: the sedan Venus Concept and the SUV Earth Concept. According to the company, these models ‘preview the future direction of the Ioniq lineup brand ahead of Auto China 2026.’ The trade show opens its door on 24 April this year.Hyundai has struggled to gain traction in China’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle market. It wasn’t until last year that the company launched its first China-specific battery-electric model, the EO. While the vehicle is built on Hyundai’s dedicated E-GMP platform—also underpinning the Ioniq series in Europe—the EO has been positioned as a standalone model tailored specifically for local demand.Going forward, Hyundai plans to market its electric vehicles in China under the ‘Ioniq’ label, aligning its local lineup more closely with its global EV strategy.“Alongside the concepts, Hyundai Motor presented a strategy aimed at strengthening its position in the Chinese market, expanding the Ioniq brand’s lineup beyond products into a mobility experience,” the company stated. The two concept vehicles are set to ‘signal the beginning of this new chapter.’ Hyundai has yet to disclose detailed specifications for the powertrains of its two concept vehicles or the forthcoming production models. What is clear, however, is that the vehicles will be offered exclusively as battery-electric models. With the China-market EO, Hyundai already diverged from its global technology approach by using LFP cells supplied by BYD subsidiary FinDreams, instead of the battery systems deployed in South Korea and Europe. A similar strategy is therefore likely for future Ioniq models in China, which may not feature the battery technology used in E-GMP-based vehicles elsewhere. The naming strategy will also be adapted for the Chinese market. Rather than continuing the familiar ‘Ioniq’ plus number format, Hyundai plans to introduce a new scheme based on planetary names. According to the company, this is intended to reflect the idea that ‘each vehicle orbits around the customer — the central focus of this new Ioniq universe.’ The current concept vehicles, known as Venus and Earth, could therefore reach production as Ioniq Venus and Ioniq Earth. However, there is one commonality with the existing Ioniq models: the angular design. The Venus concept is inspired by ‘the brightest planet’s timeless beauty’ and is painted in the striking shade ‘Radiant Gold.’ Inside, the driver-focused, wraparound cockpit with layered ambient lighting is designed to evoke the luminous atmosphere of Venus. Meanwhile, the Earth concept embodies ‘the vitality and biological balance of our home planet.’“Starting with the two concept cars unveiled today, we will continue to present products that reflect deep insight into Chinese customers and our genuine commitment to this market,” said Li Fenggang, President of Beijing Hyundai Motor Company. “Built on Ioniq’s uncompromising principles of world-class safety and quality, we will soon introduce production models that seamlessly combine the smart driving and smart cabin experiences that Chinese consumers demand”hyundai.news
