Report: Honda Delays Next-Gen CR-V ProductionAFP - Getty ImagesHonda is delaying production of the next-generation CR-V until April 2027 so it can first build more existing CR-Vs, according to an Automotive News report. To make room for more CR-Vs in the future, Honda reportedly canceled its original plans to build the next-gen Civic at its Indiana plant beginning in March 2028.The hybrid-only CR-V will reportedly become the only vehicle built at Honda's Indiana plant, and Civics will be imported from Canada and Japan. The Honda CR-V is getting a major redesign for 2028, but the automaker is reportedly pushing back the start of production to make more 2027 models first. Though the delayed start date means lower output of the new CR-V in the first year, Honda is clearing space for increased production in the near future, according to a report from Automotive News. The CR-V is Honda's most popular nameplate in the United States, making up 9.5 percent of Honda's total U.S. sales through September this year. The Civic comes in second place, but Honda is prioritizing U.S. production of the redesigned compact SUV over its economy car in 2028.HondaLast year, Honda shifted a lot of its CR-V production from Canada to the United States to lower the impact of import tariffs. U.S.-market CR-Vs are now primarily built in East Liberty, Ohio, and Greensburg, Indiana. The current-generation CR-Vs are in high demand, so Honda is reportedly pushing production of the redesigned hybrid-only CR-V to April 2027 to give this year's model a bit more production time. The delay means Honda is said to be expecting a 6.7 percent decrease in its monthly output of the redesigned model in its first year. However, that reduction will be followed by a huge production increase. The AN report says Honda is canceling its original plans to build the next-gen Civic at its Indiana plant beginning in May 2028, which gives the CR-V plenty of breathing room once the Civic moves out. The Indiana plant is projected to build around 70,000 Civics this year.Marc Urbano - Car and DriverCivic hatchbacks sold in North America are exclusively built in Indiana. While the next-gen Civic sedan will still be built in Canada, Honda will begin importing Civic hatchbacks from its Japanese plant once next-gen production takes over. The restructuring is part of Honda's ambitious plan to release 15 new or heavily refreshed models globally by 2030, with an emphasis on its next-generation hybrid powertrains. Honda is reportedly planning to build another hybrid-focused assembly plant in the United States, but that space is likely claimed by its upcoming large hybrid SUV lineup. The next-generation CR-V will reportedly be sold with only a hybrid powertrain and is projected to start production in 2027 for the 2028 model year.➡️ Skip the lot.
