Ford recalls 548,000 Expedition SUVs over chrome console defect (Brandon Bell/Getty Images)Ford is recalling 548,463 vehicles in the U.S. over a defect in the center console, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday.Certain 2018–2024 Ford Expedition SUVs are covered by the recall. At issue is the chrome plating on the center console, which can develop bubbling and peeling that leaves exposed sharp edges — a hazard that raises the injury risk for anyone who touches them, according to Reuters.NHTSA investigators believe a supplier may have produced the chrome trim components outside of Ford's required manufacturing parameters, which could explain the defect. Owners will not be charged for the fix; dealers are expected to examine the consoles and swap them out where needed.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe Expedition has been involved in several recent Ford recalls. Ford recalled more than 422,000 vehicles — including 2021–2023 Expeditions — over a wiper arm defect that could impair driver visibility. Earlier this year, Ford also recalled about 420,000 vehicles, including certain 2018–2022 Expeditions, over a seat belt pretensioner fault that could prevent the belt from moving freely during a collision.Ford has been among the most active automakers on recalls in recent years. The company issued 89 recalls in the first half of 2025 alone — more than any automaker had previously issued in a full calendar year. Ford's COO Kumar Galhotra said the pace reflects an intensive strategy to find and fix hardware and software issues, and the company said it has doubled its safety team and expanded testing on critical systems.
