According to NHTSA, the issue stems from front fuel tank strap T-slots that were missed during assembly and never seated into the vehicle's frame rail, leaving the tanks without proper support. Ford estimates that 1% of the vehicles covered by the recall have the defect.NHTSA warns that a detaching tank could spill fuel, creating the potential for engine stalling or fire, while also endangering other motorists sharing the road. If a tank detaches, it could also become a projectile hazard on the road.AdvertisementAdvertisementFord will notify affected owners by mail, with letters expected to go out beginning Sept. 21, according to Fox Business. Owners should bring their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealer for an inspection and, if necessary, a fuel tank replacement. The repair will be provided at no cost. The recall is part of a broader period of elevated safety actions at Ford. The automaker issued 89 recalls in the first half of 2025 alone, more than any automaker had ever issued in a full calendar year. Ford's chief operating officer said the rise in recalls reflected an effort to find and fix hardware and software issues, and the company said it has doubled its safety team and scaled up testing on critical systems.More recently, Ford recalled more than 422,000 vehicles over a wiper arm defect that could impair driver visibility, covering 2021-2023 Ford Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators, and 2022-2023 F-Series Super Duty trucks. A separate recall addressed a software flaw in 254,640 Lincoln and Explorer SUVs that could disable rearview cameras and driver-assistance features.Owners can check whether their specific vehicle is affected by searching their Vehicle Identification Number on NHTSA's website.
