The vehicle, officially named the “Global SUV,” is believed to be jointly developed with Leapmotor, the Stellantis-backed Chinese NEV manufacturer. According to the cooperation agreement between the two companies, Leapmotor contributes its fully self-developed electrification and intelligent technologies, while FAW provides traditional powertrain technology and supply chain resources. Design and features The new Global SUV adopts Hongqi’s design language with a closed front fascia paired with an air intake grille below. The sharp headlight clusters feature a “diamond star river” lighting effect. From the side profile, the vehicle features semi-hidden door handles and five-spoke petal-shaped wheels. The rear styling echoes the Hongqi HS5 with a dynamic design featuring a new through-type taillight assembly. According to a previous report, the model measures approximately 4,750 mm in length and is expected to feature an 800V high-voltage system, CTC 2.0 technology, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8650 chip, and a 27-in-1 integrated thermal management system. Powertrain The Global SUV is expected to launch with a range-extended electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain, featuring an internal combustion engine under the hood to generate electricity. Both Hongqi and Leapmotor currently prioritise range-extended technology. Partnership background FAW Group acquired a 5% equity stake in Leapmotor through an investment of 3.74 billion yuan (500 million USD). FAW Equity Investment purchased 74,832,245 shares at 50.03 yuan (0.7 USD) per share. The partnership aims to jointly develop plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and extended range electric vehicles (EREVs). Approximately 50% of FAW’s investment will fund R&D activities, while 25% will supplement working capital and 25% will expand sales and service networks. Hongqi’s official overseas social media accounts released official images of the Global SUV, stating it is designed for global lifestyles, targeting users who value daily comfort and refined travel experiences.
