S.Lee's Man Cave/TikTok and General MotorsConfirming whether a mechanic shop actually rotated your tires can be tough, but one driver says a tiny dab of white-out gave him the answer.TikTok creator S. Lee — who posts as S.Lee's Man Cave — revealed in a video shared on Thursday, August 27, that he put a dot of white-out on one rear tire of his Ford before a rotation, Motor1 reported. His trick is simple: If the wheel with the dot turned up in a different position, the work had been done. If it stayed where it was, it had not."Just last week I did catch somebody claiming they rotated my tires when they had not," Lee said in the video, before urging other drivers to try it: "That way when you pick it up, you'll know for sure whether or not they did the work."S.Lee's Man Cave/TikTokThe shop and the mechanic were not named, and Globe could not independently verify his account. On TikTok, Lee's followers reacted to the video, echoing that they had run into the same problem."Caught dealership last year, marked it in a black ink pen on a dirty tire and checked before I left. Called out the service manager and tech. Fixed it for me," one wrote."This is why I do my own maintenance. I have trust issues," another said.S.Lee's Man Cave/TikTokAnother user chimed in and shared, "Excellent advice, you also need to put a dot on your oil filter a lot of these shops and dealerships [sic]. Think we're stupid and don't think a new oil filter is going to matter.!!"The simple trick has surfaced before: Earlier this year, The Daily Dot covered a mechanic who posted about a customer who had written on his tires to make sure they were rotated. As First for Auto previously reported, your tires don't all wear down at the same pace. Each one carries a different load and does a different job, so some wear out faster than others. A rotation moves them to new positions so the wear evens out and the set lasts longer.S.Lee's Man Cave/TikTokIf you own a car, CarFax recommends a rotation about every 5,000 miles or every six months, which usually lines up with an oil change.Your vehicle may call for something different, so check the owner's manual.CarFax says electric vehicles are even more likely to need regular rotations because they're heavier, and it puts the interval for all-wheel-drive vehicles at every 3,000 to 5,000 miles. The service itself is cheap.According to the site, you shouldn't pay more than $50 to $100, about the same as an oil change. It's mostly labor, since nothing gets replaced. That is also why the white-out trick matters — if a shop charges for a rotation it didn't do, you've paid for work you didn't get.Read More From First for AutosMan Purchases Used Ford Mustang From Dealer, Ends Up Without Vehicle or Title in Cautionary TaleWoman Takes Audi Q5 to Mechanic for 2 Minor Leaks, Manager Took It for a Joyride and Totaled ItMichael Jordan's Ferrari 550 Maranello He Drove With NBA Trophy Sells for $2.7 MillionThis story Driver Reveals White Paint Trick Exposed Mechanic Lying About Car Service first appeared on First for Autos.
