BYD Atto 3 gets another price cut in Thailand – popular EV SUV is now from 629,900 baht or RM81k

The Chinese-led EV price war in Thailand is showing no signs of ending. With the sheer amount of rivals in the market (they have Deepal, and Aion is much stronger there) and with stock to clear, carmakers are resorting to slashing prices. Here, the BYD Atto 3 gets another price cut of up to 200,000 baht (RM25,775).

That’s the discount for the Atto 3 Extended 60.48 kWh, which is now available for just 699,900 baht (RM90,190) in the Land of Smiles. The entry-level Atto 3 Premium 50.25 kWh gets a 170,000 baht (RM21,907) discount for a new sticker price of 629,900 baht (RM81,170). This ‘EV3.0 Best Deal’ promo is valid from now till December 10.

Now, this is not the first time the Atto 3 has seen its RRP slashed. Back in late-2022, the original price of the CBU import from China was 1,099,900 baht (RM141,766) for the Standard and 1,199,900 baht (RM154,655) for the Extended. Local assembly from July 2024 brought down the EV’s price to 799,900 baht (RM103,110) for the Standard and 899,900 baht (RM116,001) for the Extended. Again, we’re now looking at 629,900 baht (RM81,170) and 699,900 baht (RM90,190) respectively.

Malaysia has a RM100k floor price for CBU EVs, but OEMs can offer packages to lower the effective price

Over in Malaysia, the price war isn’t as fierce as in Thailand, as we have a government-set RM100k floor price for CBU imported EVs, which are tax-free till the end of this year. While carmakers have to advertise a minimum RRP of RM100k, discounts and other packages can be given to lower the effective price of the car. An example of this is the BYD Atto 2, launched in July.

Here, the Chinese EV price war was initiated by the Proton eMas 7, which was launched in December 2024 and went straight to the top of the EV sales chart. At RM105,800 for the Prime and RM119,800 for the Premium, the eMas 7’s apparent value for money prompted BYD to launch the Atto 3 Ultra in April with a price of RM118,800 after an early bird rebate.

The Atto 3 Extended Range was launched in December 2022 for RM167,800, so the Ultra was a substantial drop. Shortly after that, the Chery Omoda E5 joined the party with a RM27,000 cut to make RM119,818 for 2024 units. This became a RM98,818 clearance sale in May. The electric Omoda was launched in March 2024 for RM146,800.

The Proton eMas 7 started a mini EV price war in Malaysia and is now the segment leader

Later, smaller players like the GAC Aion Y Plus and Leapmotor C10 also had to drop their RRPs just to remain in the frame. The latter, which has the biggest body of all cars mentioned here, gets improved specs and is now priced at RM125,000 – it was launched in October 2024 for RM159,000, or RM149,000 with an early bird discount.

Other Chinese EVs in this very congested space include the MG S5 (RM116,548 to RM136,548) and the well-priced and cool-looking iCaur 03 (RM119,800 to RM129,800). Speaking of the Chery-owned iCaur brand, the V23 with classic Land Cruiser looks will be launching soon.
