Emergency mechanical door handles inside the cars’ cabins are difficult to identify, as their color is similar to the interior trim. It can influence the occupants’ ability to open the doors and escape the car during a low-voltage system failure. Previously, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the “Technical Requirements for Automobile Door Handle Safety” standard. It will come into force in January 2027, requiring every door to have an external door handle with mechanical release functionality. Internal handles must be easily identifiable, clearly visible, and positioned within 300mm of door edges. This standard has yet to come into force. However, the Chinese government has already started tightening door handle rules, as most of the operating automakers filed recall plans for interior door handles. China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) released a massive recall plan, which is said to be the largest in all of automotive history. According to SAMR, BAIC, Chery, Dongfeng, FAW Hongqi, Geely, Leapmotor, Tesla, Xiaomi, Xpeng, and other automakers filed a recall plan in accordance with the requirements of the “Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products” and the “Implementation Measures for the Regulations on the Recall of Defective Automobile Products.” Tesla was influenced the most, with almost 3 million vehicles being recalled. According to recall information, the emergency mechanical grab handle in the vehicles from the mentioned automakers is difficult to identify and operate because its color is similar to the interior trim. Therefore, automakers will add warning labels free of charge to the emergency mechanical grab handles inside the recalled vehicles. Most of the cars will also receive the special Over-The-Air (OTA) update that will add a post-accident window-lowering function. We listed information about recalls below.
