Waymo has suspended its freeway operations in multiple cities to improve the robotaxi’s performance in construction zones. This comes after a robotaxi sped through a construction zone with a passenger in it, prompting a police chase.According to a report by TechCrunch, Waymo suspended freeway robotaxi services in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Miami, as it is in the process of applying “recent technical learnings” to its software. The company expects to resume services on these routes soon.Waymo began offering highway rides in November last year, helping users reach their destinations faster than they would have via surface streets. Passengers in the Bay Area reportedly witnessed a travel time reduction of around 45 to 60 minutes.Screenshot of video by @Elliot_slade on XAdvertisementAdvertisementWhile the robotaxi operator did not reveal if a particular incident triggered the freeway ride suspension, a user reported on X how the robotaxi drove through the cones in a construction zone, leading to a police chase. It told us to keep seatbelts on, it tried to merge – when it couldn’t it darted right through traffic cones and police and accelerated to highway speeds into a construction zone.”Right before it started freaking out a remote operator or something came on board.
