Photo: ABB E-mobility Walmart has partnered with ABB E-mobility to install its A400 All-in-One DC fast chargers at seven Walmart locations in the Phoenix area. The Arizona sites, along with stores in Colorado, Florida, and Georgia, are part of a broader US-wide Walmart-ABB launch. Charging while you shop Walmart is uniquely positioned to host EV charging stations. With more than 5,200 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the US, around 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of one. By installing fast chargers at stores people already visit regularly, Walmart makes the charging part of the EV transition more seamless and accessible for those who need a fast charge, or who don’t have a home charger yet. And it’s not just about EV drivers’ convenience; Walmart is getting something out of this, too. Studies show that being near EV chargers can boost store visits by up to 4%, and drivers tend to spend more time in-store while their cars are plugged in. Up to 400 kW charging The chargers going in are ABB E-mobility’s A400 units, which can deliver up to 400 kilowatts of power. That means a single EV can pull the full 400 kW if it’s capable, or two vehicles can charge at up to 200 kW each simultaneously. Initial installations are underway at stores in Mesa, Tempe, Apache Junction, and Queen Creek. In total, nine Walmart locations across the Phoenix metro area are expected to be online in the coming months, with 38 chargers planned. The chargers will support both CCS and NACS connectors. Built for scalability The A400 chargers also include a 32-inch display for things like promotions and ads, and ABB says the system is designed for high reliability, with a claimed 99% uptime. ABB says the sites are designed with future expansion in mind. The company is also supplying electrical infrastructure, including its ReliaGear switchboard, which can support additional upgrades, such as battery storage, down the line, should stores want to expand the charging stations.
