The judges went full-on traditional roadster this year at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, California, picking a winner that looked like it just rolled out of a 1960 Hot Rod Magazine cover shoot. Nicole Baird’s ’32 Ford was built by Squeeg’s Kustoms in Mesa, Arizona, the third car from Squeeg’s to win an AMBR, so they’re doing something right in Mesa. Baird’s ’32 was finished in Metallic Blue Pearl with white scallops done by Tracy and Terry Weaver, complemented by extensive chrome by Jon Wright & Ogden and polish from Russell’s Custom Polish. It rolled on drag slicks in the back and wide, white sidewalls all around. But despite Baird’s ancestry overlapping with the real Ford family in Detroit, it wasn’t a Ford flathead up front. Power comes from a Buick Nailhead V8 built by Roger Beckman. The interior was crafted by Recovery Room. This was the entry from Hot Rod Chavik. It is as inventive and artistic as its builder’s story is inspirational. Stanislav (Stanley) Chavik was born in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia, raised on American movies and GI surplus parts. He and wife Daisy moved to the United States after the Velvet Revolution and started Hot Rod Chavik. They’ve made some gorgeous roadsters and race cars since. This is the latest and the one I had picked to win. Keep building, Stanley, you will win one day.Another AMBR entry in a very strong year. Another AMBR entry in a very strong year.
