With so many crossovers on sale, the bar doesn't just stop at fuel economy - many buyers also want as much luxury as possible. This means a compact SUV fully loaded with practical features, tech, comfortable seats, premium materials, and more. That's why luxury-oriented compact crossovers are booming, especially ones that manage to combine all these qualities into one, affordable package.Today, a wide range of premium-feeling crossovers are available at surprisingly low starting prices, especially when in non-hybrid form, so we reviewed them to find the cheapest model with the highest fuel economy rating, in that order. To give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from the manufacturer websites, while fuel economy was sourced from the EPA. Most Economical Small Luxury SUV: Buick Envista Fuel Economy Rating: 30 MPG / Price: $23,800 2024 Buick Envista-1Buick dropped its long-running Regal nameplate in 2020, part of the culling of the last sedans on sale to make way for the continuing onslaught of crossovers and SUVs. Today, the Buick brand - the luxury-oriented arm of GM - produces a handful of SUVs, from the subcompact Encore GX to the Envision and the full-size Enclave SUV. The Envista is the newest one to the Buick stable and is a compact crossover based on the GM 'VSS' platform shared with other models, including the Chevy Trax, the mechanical sibling to the Envista. EPA-Rated Fuel Economy: Premium Crossovers Both the Envista and Trax can muster an impressive 30 MPG combined, with city and highway economy ratings of 28 MPG and 32 MPG, respectively. The Trax is pitched at a slightly different demographic than the Buick Envista, which is slightly more luxury-oriented, but otherwise they share powertrains, components, and offer roughly the same interior space. As we can see above, the Envista is one of the most efficient non-hybrid crossovers you can buy from the premium class, beaten by the Taos, although this Volkswagen model is more expensive than the Envista. There are more efficient crossovers for sale with non-hybrid engines, such as the Nissan Kicks (33 MPG combined) and Toyota Corolla Cross (32 MPG combined). Since we are looking at the premium end of the market, we end up at the Envista, which costs more than the Chevy Trax and less than the Volkswagen Taos. The 2025 Buick Envista By The Numbers Lyndon Conrad Bell - photo Buyers will appreciate the reasonable fuel bills that the Envista will bestow upon them (the EPA rates the annual fuel bill at $1,550), but the starting price of $23,000 is also keen. There are three trims, but they all come with the same efficient powertrain, composed of a small, turbocharged three-pot and an automatic 'box. This engine is shared with a range of other GM models, including the Chevy Trailblazer and Trax. 2025 Buick Envista: Basic Specs Road tests generally cite the three-cylinder as adequate, but performance and speed are not its strong points - in lieu of strong acceleration, decent fuel economy is awarded to a careful driver. Thanks to its focus as an urban cruiser, the Envista doesn't bother with all-wheel drive like its Chevy sibling, which helps fuel economy by saving weight and reducing the amount of power lost with an all-wheel-drive setup. The Economic Engine Under The Hood Buick Envista (2024), closeup of grille Chevy Trax pricing begins at $21,895 with taxes included, rising to $25,895 for its higher trims. The premium Envista begins more or less at the same upper price point and then increases to nearly $30,000 for the Avenir trim, the flagship trim, which takes the luxury feel and features to its highest. 2025 Buick Envista Pricing By Trim Many reviews still point to the interior quality as not being enough to rival true luxury brands, but the Envista is charming enough, especially in Avenir trim. Mazda's CX-30 begins at $25,000, but luxury German rivals like the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA start at $40,000 and $43,000, respectively. So what do we get with the Envista when it's in range-topping Avenir trim? Features include: 19" Avenir Premium Pearl Nickel aluminum Watts Link rear suspension for enhanced ride quality Heated steering wheel Heated front seats Wireless phone charging 11-inch infotainment display / 8-inch digital gauge cluster (standard on all models) Additional cosmetic upgrades, including door sill plates Runner-Up: Volkswagen Taos Fuel Economy Rating: 31 MPG / Price: $24,995 2025 vw taosVolkswagen's Taos is not strictly a luxury crossover, but it is generally classified as a premium one, with features available that are commonly seen on higher-end SUVs, as well as a fit and finish that hides its reasonable price well. Unlike the Envista, this crossover does offer all-wheel drive, but this affects the EPA's fuel economy rating. When equipped as such, it lowers the combined figure from 31 MPG to 28 MPG, which is still competitive. The 1.5-liter engine is economical and has enough horsepower to make the Taos a little more eager to move than the Envista. 2025 Volkswagen Taos: Basic Specs When it received an overhaul for 2025, its engine was also tweaked to extract an additional 16 horsepower, and the transmission is also now a smooth eight-speed (auto) for all versions. Despite the slightly higher fuel economy figure, the Taos is more expensive to buy than the Buick Envista, so it comes as a runner-up in our hunt for the best combination of economy and price. On the highway, the EPA rates the front-wheel-drive Taos as capable of up to 36 MPG, which is very good for this vehicle. 2025 Volkswagen Taos: Pricing VW SE models offer a good deal of equipment such as heated seats, parking sensors front and rear, 18-inch wheels, adaptive headlamps, and wireless charging, as well as much more. Standard S trim models make do with 17-inch wheels, but even this base trim offers desirable equipment, including adaptive cruise control, LED projector headlamps, manual air conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, and more. Highlights of the SE Black are mostly the aesthetic upgrades it offers, unsurprisingly, in black. 2025 Volkswagen Taos Pricing By Trim At the top of the pile is the expensive SEL trim, which does come with some luxurious features. It shares the same eight-inch infotainment screen as the other trims, but the wheels are now 19 inches in diameter. It adds a panoramic sunroof, light-up grille, ventilated seats, leather upholstery, ambient interior lighting, and a few other cosmetic differences. Thanks to its price and these luxury features, it seems like a great value against the pricier German rivals, even if it ultimately falls short in terms of cabin design and true luxury ambiance. Still, in its favor is the combination of an affordable price, decent fuel economy, and enough premium features for most busy people, just like the Envista above. You really can (almost) have it all.
