When Rolls-Royce started out, it made a claim that has stuck for 120 years. An advert for the 1906 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, more humbly named the "40/50hp", went all in, promoting it as: ‘The six-cylinder Rolls-Royce – not one of the best, but the Best Car in the World.’ The phrase would forever be associated with Rolls-Royce. But has Rolls now got a challenger to the claim, in the form of a Chinese SUV that costs a fraction of the price? And does this Chinese luxury car have the most mind-blowing party trick we've ever seen on a car? Read on to find out. The Zeekr Is A Rolls-Royce Challenger You Never Heard Of Carwow may be best known for drag racing anything on four wheels, but a recent YouTube video probably raised far more eyebrows than an SUV going toe-to-toe with a supercar. The team pitched a 5-year-old, second-hand Rolls-Royce Cullinan against a car that most people will have never heard of, with startling results. Could a $70,000 Chinese four-cylinder SUV that you'd probably walk past on the street really compete with a six-figure offering from arguably the world's most prestigious car brand? It turns out the answer is: yes. The Zeekr Has A Four-Cylinder Engine and 1,400 Horsepower CarWow/ Zeekr For starters, the range-topping Zeekr 8X looks like a lot of other new cars from China. That is, seemingly a mix of a dozen different influences, with lashings of shiny black, and enough screens to fill the TV department of a medium-sized shopping mall. But, joking aside, it doesn't look half bad — it's just not as recognizable as the Cullinan standing next to it. Up until now, the Cullinan has been in a class of its own.The Cullinan may be an SUV, but it is every inch a Rolls-Royce, from the elegant and blocky exterior styling to the 6.75 engine, albeit a twin-turbo V12 rather than an L-Series V8. That unit pushes out 563 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque. The Zeekr only has a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine, but that is linked to three electric motors to produce an incredible 1,400 hp and 1,040 lb-ft of torque. Unsurprisingly, the first Carwow test, a drag race, was easily won by the Zeekr, which smokes the Rolls in a straight line. Carwow Carried Out A Series Of Tests On The Two Cars CarWow/ YouTubeThen there are a series of tests, some more scientific than others (such as the glass of water test), as well as looking at the features on offer. Both are stacked with luxury tech, such as soft-close automatic doors, massage seats in the front (the Zeekr has them in the rear as too), and large infotainment screens in the front. The Rolls does stand out as having the best materials, say the testers. But in other areas the Zeekr appears to have one up on the Rolls. The Zeekr Can Do Something Few Other Cars Can Do CarWow/ YouTube A quick vox pop by Carwow shows that a lot of people imagine the Zeekr to be worth a lot more than it is. The price of a Chinese SUV is put at £54,300, or $73,400, while the used Cullinan costs £250,000, or $337,955. The Zeekr does have a few features that the Rolls doesn't, such as a blind spot camera feed in the heads-up display. "I've never seen that before in my life," says Matt Watson, adding "I think Europe is in trouble." There is also one party trick the Zeekr has that the Rolls doesn't, or any other car that we've seen for that matter. But you'll have to watch the whole video to find out what it is. All we'll say is, it's worth it.
