A stolen car is every true gearhead's biggest fear. That's completely understandable, as car thefts are constantly on the rise. In fact, U.S. motor thefts more than doubled between 2019 and 2023. That said, certain car brands and types are also more prone to theft than others. We've all seen the scare stories about how Kia has had problems with car thefts, for example. One of the segments of cars that's up there in the lists of the most stolen cars are muscle cars– and one in particular is targeted so much that it may just be the most stolen car of all time. It's a higher-performance variant of a very popular muscle sedan in North America. As you'll see in a bit, it's not the only variant of that muscle sedan that gets frequently stolen, either. The Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Is The Most Stolen Muscle Car Of All Time 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat - 3 Specs Source: DodgeThe Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is definitely one of the best muscle sedans ever made. It's an absolute performance monster, putting out 707 hp and 650 lb-ft from its supercharged V8. It looks aggressive to boot, with looks that aren't going to age any time soon. Those desirable qualities that make it so loved by enthusiasts also make it very tempting for car thieves. Not only is the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat the most stolen muscle car in the IIHS study, but it topped the list overall of the highest whole vehicle theft claim frequencies. While it may not have had the highest number of claims between 2020-22 at 196 or the highest relative claim severity at 197, it did have the highest relative claim frequency at 6,128. It also had the highest relative overall losses at 12,073. Those numbers easily make it the most stolen muscle car of all time, at least according to the records we have. The Dodge Charger Hemi Is Also Very Likely To Be Stolen The SRT Hellcat isn't the only variant of the Dodge Charger that's a big target for car thieves. The regular V8-powered Hemi trim is also high up on the list of cars that get stolen the most. It was second overall in the list of the most stolen cars, with a staggering 712 claims overall between 2020 and 2022. Its relative claim frequency is also really high, with 2,197 during that time period. Its relative claim severity and relative overall losses didn't make things look much better either, with 115 and 2,523, respectively. Other Cars That Are Frequently Stolen Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 Front Three QuarterThe Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat may top the list both overall and when it comes to muscle cars. But, what about the other cars that seem to be a magnet for car thieves? Well, there are a good few other cars out there that have real problems with car theft. The next four cars here are all cars that were among the most stolen on that IIHS report, and all for different reasons. Infiniti Q50 After the two Dodge Charger variants, the third most stolen car in the IIHS's survey was the Infiniti Q50. This sports sedan is incredibly underrated, but it seems to be an absolute magnet for car thieves. From a total of 90 claims between 2020-22, the Infiniti Q50 had a relative claim frequency of 878 and a relative claim severity of 92. The relative overall losses for the Infiniti Q50 for that time period were a hefty 805. If you want to buy a Q50, you might have to keep how attractive it is to car thieves in mind. Dodge Challenger The Dodge Challenger is the sibling to the Charger. As you might expect, it's one of the most stolen cars in the IIHS report. Out of a total of 375 claims made between 2020-22, it has a relative claim frequency of 766. Its relative claim severity is 107, and its relative overall losses were 822. Much like it Charger sibling, then, you'll have to be pretty mindful of potential thieves if you buy one. Land Rover Range Rover The Land Rover Range Rover is an incredibly desirable car. People still love them and want them, despite the problems they always seem to end up having. It's no surprise, then, that it's one of the most stolen cars recorded in the IIHS report. The Range Rover only had 111 claims made during the study's time period. But, its relative claim frequency was 611, its relative claim severity was 254, and its relative overall losses were a shocking 1,551. While you may not be as likely to have your Range Rover stolen as some other cars, you're likely going to end up needing to file a huge insurance claim if it happens. Kia Sportage Not so long ago, it would have been very odd to see a Kia on this list. But, the Kia Sportage is one of the most stolen cars in America these days! There were 387 claims on stolen Kia Sportages from 2020-22, making it have some of the highest numbers of claims on the most stolen list. It also had a relative claim frequency of 479 and it had relative overall losses of 279. Its relative claim severity isn't that high, though compared to other cars on the most stolen list, registering just 58.The reason why Sportages are stolen so much is down to a problem with Kia's vehicles as a whole that was highlighted through social media. Thankfully, this has been corrected by a huge recall. But, if you own a Kia Sportage, you should probably take a few extra precautions. An opportunistic car thief might still think they can have a go at stealing one! The Cars That Are Stolen The Least Dodge Charger EV Drag Races Tesla Model 3 Performance 1We now know what cars are the most stolen. But, what about the cars that are stolen the least? The IIHS report mentions those, too. 4 of the cars that are stolen the least come from a variety of different brands. They're also cars that you may not expect to be a deterrent to thieves! Tesla Model 3 There are two Tesla vehicles on the list of the least stolen cars. One of them is the Tesla Model 3, which ranks the highest on the list of the least stolen vehicles, with only 3 claims recorded from 2020-22. Its relative claim severity is on the higher end of the least stolen list, though, at 136. Still, the sheer lack of claims on stolen Tesla Model 3s is incredibly impressive! Tesla Model Y The other Tesla car on the list of the least stolen vehicles is the Tesla Model Y. Second on the list of the least stolen vehicles, the IIHS report only measured 5 claims on stolen Model Ys from 2020-22. The Model Y also has a very low relative claim frequency of 3 and a low rate of overall losses at 4. That's an incredibly impressive score, and puts it on the same level as the Tesla Model 3 for avoiding the attention of car thieves. Volvo XC90 Breaking away from the Teslas, the next-highest car on the list of the least stolen cars is the Volvo XC90. Only 3 claims for stolen XC90s were made between 2020 and 2022, with a relative claim frequency of 6 and a relative claim severity of 114. The Volvo XC90 is a competitor to the Land Rover Range Rover, so you'd maybe expect it to be similarly sought-out by car thieves. Perhaps it's just nowhere near as desirable? GMC Acadia The GMC Acadia is a car that you might not be expect to be among the least-stolen vehicles in that IIHS report. But, it is! It's the fourth least stolen car on the list, with only 4 claims made during the 2020-22 period. That's actually less claims than the Tesla Model Y, but it doesn't place as highly. That's due to the GMC Acadia having a higher figure for its relative claim frequency and relative overall losses. The Acadia's fairly low attraction to car thieves could be similar to why the Volvo XC90 isn't that sought after by them either. It's clearly not as desirable as some of its competitors, so thieves looking for an SUV to steal may look elsewhere. Should You Be Worried About Your Muscle Car Being Stolen? With how scary the numbers look for both the Dodge Charger and the Dodge Challenger, you might be wondering whether buying a muscle car is worth it in the first place. What's the point of getting one if it's only going to become a massive target for car thieves? Well, not all of the numbers for these cars are as bad as they look. Even the Charger SRT Hellcat, the car that topped the IIHS report as being the most stolen, didn't have as many claims as some cars that were lower down the list. The car with the most amount of claims was the Honda CR-V. This fairly sedate family SUV had a staggering 1,141 claims. If you're really worried about your muscle car being stolen, there are always extra precautions you can take. You can make sure it's parked in a secure area as much as possible, keep the keys in a Faraday cage so they're far away from the car and can't be tampered with, and install a multitude of anti-theft tools. These anti-theft tools can range from steering wheel locks to GPS trackers, and all of them are readily available.
