What once was an unfettered, cream of the crop, luxury sedan leader has now, in recent times, become contested. Hyperscreens, questionable material quality, and a four-cylinder AMG — these are all factors that have essentially made consumers question Mercedes-Benz in general. Sedans in the US aren't that popular either, but at least if you're going for a luxury sedan, it better be the best quality money can buy. There is a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, however. Recently, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Electric was unveiled to high praise from several publications. At this point, are you just paying for a badge of honor and bragging rights, or are you really getting the best bang for your buck? If you're not totally satisfied with what Mercedes sedans have to offer, there are alternative options. Cadillac Promised A Mercedes Alternative — Here's Where It Falls Short Cadillac Let's start off with a compelling alternative to any and all imported brands. The Cadillac CT5 gave American consumers a convincing reason to walk past Mercedes showrooms. The CT5 has pricing advantages over its German rival, as well as much more interior volume, including legroom, headroom, and even rear legroom. For all the praise, however, it has not actually earned any real-world accolades, nor does it seem nearly as up to snuff as something like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Where The CT5 Gets It Right Cadillac Even though the CT5 might not be able to hold a candle to the Mercedes-Benz E and C-Classes on the market, there are actually a lot of features that shouldn't be overlooked in the CT5. To start with, there's SuperCruise available, a 33-inch curved display, and an optional twin-turbo V6 that offers a lot of responsive strength. Not to mention, the CT5-V Blackwing could truly give any AMG a run for its money. 2026 Cadillac CT5 Specs The Reliability And Refinement Gap Cadillac One of the main reasons the Cadillac CT5 didn't make the number one spot is that in newer model years, it's seen several complaints. Some owners have reported that at around 30,000 miles, they have seen turbocharger failures as well as glitches with the infotainment system. According to CarEdge, the CT5 will run about $9,819 in maintenance and repair over the first 10 years of ownership. RepairPal only gives it a 3.0 out of 5.0 when it comes to overall reliability and has an annual average repair cost of $783. Why So Many E-Class Shoppers Walk Past It On The Lot Prashirwin Naidu | Topspeed In the States, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has a weighty reputation behind it. It puts the 'E' in "executive." Ironically enough, E-Class will often double as taxi cabs in the EU. Fun facts aside, the Stateside pull of the E-Class is falling fast and hard. RepairPal ranks Mercedes-Benz 27th out of 32 car brands in terms of overall reliability. The average annual maintenance cost is around $900 for a Benz, and the 10-year maintenance bill averages $12,942. You could buy a used car with that money. What A $60,000 Mercedes Actually Gets You In 2026 Prashirwin Naidu | Topspeed Sixty thousand dollars doesn't even actually qualify you for a Mercedes-Benz E-Class in today's money. Instead, the only model within this price range is a Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The E-Class starts around $65,000 while the C-Class starts around $51,000. To be fair, this is still a Mercedes at the end of the day, and they will elicit many different forms of excitement. While you're not going to get the executive-class interior or engine, you still get a level of Mercedes-Benz luxury from a C-Class. The One Question That Changes The Whole Conversation Prashirwin Naidu | Topspeed Of course, nobody at the Mercedes-Benz dealership is going to ask you: What are you exactly paying for? It's not the features — you can find those in anything nowadays (except maybe the 3D gauge cluster). It's not the performance, although that's just to be expected with a Mercedes, and some will buy it for that. What you're really buying it for is the three-pointed star and how you will be perceived in the parking lot and by those around you in your immediate life. If that's what you're looking for, then you do have other options. The Genesis G80's Specs Aren't Playing Around Genesis Disruption in any market is not speculation; it's typically inevitable. That's what the 2026 Genesis G80 is here for. It's designed not to be an alternative, but to be the choice for a luxury mid-size sedan. The G80 rides on a platform that's comprised of 19 percent aluminum, making it 243 pounds lighter than its predecessor. It pays dividends not only in performance but also in fuel efficiency. Engine Options And Horsepower Lyndon Conrad Bell | Top Speed It also shares the same platform with its SUV sibling, the Genesis GV80. Therefore, the powertrain options are the same. Both engine options for the G80 come standard with all-wheel drive, which is something that Mercedes-Benz expects you to pay extra for, for the 4Matic. While it might not be made to canyon carve with the E-Class (even though it could hold its own), what it is made to do is shield you from the outside world, and it does exactly that. Interior And Tech Features Lyndon Conrad Bell | Top Speed The Genesis G80 was facelifted recently. The interior in the previous iteration was extremely nice, but this new version is even nicer. Its interior architecture is reminiscent of nothing else, and it instantly registers as luxurious. The materials employed are at once tasteful and sumptuous, with quilted upholstery and contrasting piping on the heated and ventilated seats. Soft closing doors, rear sunshades, a heated steering wheel, and a heated center armrest further add to the luxury quotient.- Lyndon Conrad Bell, TopSpeed JournalistIt comes standard with a 27-inch OLED display that acts as the instrument cluster and the infotainment system. Genesis also keeps things extremely simple by giving you all the features you want within the trim level that you choose. Unlike Mercedes, where you have to scroll through an unending list of options and could eventually end up with heated seats but not cooled in a $75,000 Mercedes. Standard features include: Premium nine-speaker system Heated front and rear seats Leatherette seating Tri-zone automatic climate control system Highway driving assist 2 Standard safety equipment Ownership, Reliability, And The Real Cost Of The Badge You're Skipping Genesis When you overlook the Mercedes-Benz logo, you really start to understand that the Genesis G80 can offer you almost everything you'd want out of a luxury sedan and more. One of the biggest differences between the two you'll notice is the lower cost of ownership over time. Genesis even includes 36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance, like tire rotations, oil changes, and filter replacements. If that sounds familiar, it's because it's very similar to their parent company, Hyundai's, coverage. Long-Haul Reliability Costs CarBuzz Also, similar to Hyundai, the Genesis G80 comes with a 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty for the powertrain. According to J.D. Power, the G80, although it scored lower overall, has scored an 80 for two years in a row for quality and reliability. That's right on par with the Mercedes-Benz E Class and a few points higher than the BMW 5 Series. Mercedes will definitely beat out Genesis in dealership experience every time, however. Five-Year Comparison Genesis G80 3.5T AWD Interior shot showing fron seatsTo bring it back to the money, the Genesis G80 is nearly $6,000 cheaper to start than the base model. The sticker price is only the beginning because, according to Consumer Affairs, you will have a 20 percent likelihood of a major repair happening to the G80 compared with the E-Class' 33 percent. The average cost of maintenance is nearly double, from $500 for the Genesis to $900 for the Mercedes-Benz. Not to mention, Mercedes-Benz doesn't include complimentary scheduled maintenance for the base E-Class either.Sources: Mercedes-Benz, Genesis, Cadillac, RepairPal, CarEdge, Consumer Affairs
