You ever pack your SUV up for a weekend trip to the coast only to find that you don't have quite as much space as you'd like? Or maybe you just hate cleaning your car out, and you wish there was more space for all that clutter (no matter how bad it may be for your fuel economy). If this is you, then the Scion xB, which may be the boxiest of all those '00s boxy hatchbacks, might be right up your alley. The Scion xB was always easy on the wallet, selling at a base MSRP of just $17,120 for the 2015 model year. More than a decade since the car was retired, it's still the king of cargo space per dollar, with some older models listing for peanuts while offering nearly 70 cubic feet of storage with the seats folded flat. The Scion xB Is A Charming Reminder Of The Millennial Era Scion The Scion xB first launched for the 2003 model year, with a second-gen xB hitting the market in 2007, for the 2008 model year, and running until the nameplate was retired after the 2015 model year. The Scion xB was never the most remarkable thing on the road when it came to performance, but that wasn't really the point of this vehicle. It was a charming, boxy hatchback with a unique design that maximized the car's potential as a cargo-hauler. Middling Performance, Segment-Leading Cargo Space Scion Put simply, this car was sold not on horsepower, but on cubic inches and elbow room. With the seats up, the Scion xB can pack 11.6 cubic feet of cargo in the very back, which isn't exactly cavernous, but it will more than handle a typical grocery trip. With the seats down, though, you've got 69.9 cubic feet of storage space, which is comparable to some mid-size SUVs, but at a much lower price. Whatever Happened To Scion, Anyway? Scion The xB was one of Scion's key models, launching with the brand's foundation in 2003, and sticking around until right before the brand was retired, in 2016. Scion got off to a strong start with its affordable, youth-oriented cars like the five-door Scion xA. By the end of the decade, however, the brand was already starting to outlive its purpose as a cheap brand for college-aged Millennials. Scion sold more than 170,000 units across all nameplates in 2006, but, in 2010, the brand sold just 45,678 units. The Scion xB Was Designed For Customization Scion Toyota's plan for Scion was to funnel young buyers toward Toyota products. To that end, the xB was designed to be highly customizable. Scions were generally sold in a single trim with a wide range of options. Buyers were free to add 18-inch TRD wheels and upgraded suspension, fog lights, leather seating, and sunroofs, with options tending to vary by dealership. As a result, it's hard to find two Scions that look exactly alike. The brand definitely had a moment as a hip, affordable brand for youngsters, but the head honchos soon realized that maturing Scion buyers were just as likely to trade their xB in for a Ford Focus as for a Toyota Camry. So, Scion became less of a priority, and Toyota seemed to have little interest in salvaging the brand. By the late 2010s, Scion had already been largely forgotten by both its parent company, and by the general public. The Scion xB Is Having A Moment, But Prices Remain Steady Scion If we take a look at pricing trends for the Scion xB, we find that the actual sale prices are holding steady, with 2015 models going for around half their original MSRP, but that we're seeing a lot of activity in the first few months of 2026. Our latest trending price for the 2015 model is based on 17 sales over the course of just three months (as of the time of this writing).Checking out some listings on our own marketplace, here's what we turn up. A 66,095-mile 2014 xB is selling for $10,995 in California. An 82,974-mile 2013 xB is selling for $11,995 in California. A 71,839-mile 2014 xB is selling for $12,990 in Georgia. A 65,345-mile 2015 xB is selling for $11,991 in Florida. An 80,329-mile 2010 xB is selling for just $6,900 in Florida. Based on these numbers, we would recommend budgeting around $12,000 for the purchase and looking for something with fewer than 100,000 miles on the odometer. You might luck out and find something like that 80,329-mile xB selling for under $7,000, but a shopping budget of $12,000 buys you a little breathing room. The car's popularity can likely be attributed to the simple fact that it's a roomy, accessible, comfortable car, selling at a very low price. There's no mistaking even a fully-loaded xB for a Lexus, but it's nice to be able to drive something cheap that doesn't feel claustrophobic. The Scion xB Is Very Easy To Recommend In 2026 ScionThe Scion xB is a very easy car to recommend for a particular type of driver. It takes about eight and a half seconds to hit 60 mph, it's available with a five-speed manual, but you'll probably have an easier time finding one with a four-speed automatic, it was fuel-efficient, at an average of 24 mpg, combined, but not one of the most fuel-efficient cars out there. It's not the quickest or the most stylish or the most driver-friendly thing on the market, even at these rock-bottom prices. But it's easy to climb and out of, if you have any mobility issues. It's one of the cheapest hatchbacks on the used market today. It offers up more cargo room than most drivers will know what to do with. It's convenient, accessible, charming, and low-maintenance.If you're an older driver looking for something easy to own, or a first-time buyer looking for a car that will get you around without much hassle, and without a bunch of parts just waiting to break down the minute you get paid, the xB is very easy for us to recommend.
