When is a barn find not a barn find? When it's a car found in the middle of a hedge. The UK seems to be full of as many people finding cars in barns as there are cars in barns, with an abundance of amazing YouTube channels charting the discovery of long-lost metal. One of the most successful duos is Elton and Claire from UK Barn Finds, who seem to find endless classics squirrelled away. But one of the most spectacular finds on the channel wasn't in a barn at all; it was inside a hedge, and most people wouldn't have even known there was a car inside. It turns out that the car is a world-first too, a truly trailblazing model that came about at the height of the British motoring industry. But what is it (and how did they get it out)? The Rare Reliant Scimitar GTE Was Found In The Middle Of A Hedge It's not every day that you find a sports car in the middle of a hedge. Even experienced classic car finders Claire and Elton from UK Barn Finds admit that they walked past the giant mound of leaves and branches, completely unaware of the secret inside. The hedge was in the midst of a large field of abandoned classics that they were working through, saying that they had walked past it "about 50 times."The car was so well hidden that there was only one thing for it: a pretty hefty-looking gas-powered hedge trimmer. Cue a montage of hacking and cutting through the undergrowth that would make Indiana Jones look like a Sunday gardener. Under the undergrowth is a Reliant Scimitar GTE, a trailblazing British car from the late '60s, looking in not too bad shape considering where it's been for a few years. The Reliant Scimitar Was A Trailblazing British Sports Car UK Barn Finds/ YouTubeInspired by the looks of the Lamborghini Espada, the Reliant Scimitar GTE (Grand Touring Estate) beat the Volvo P1800 ES wagon to the market by four years, and is credited as being the first series production two-door sporting estate, or shooting brake, on the market. There were 14,273 Scimitar GTEs built (according to various sources, including Car & Classic) but now, sadly, there are just 403 left on the UK roads (says Howmanyleft.co.uk). The bush-dwelling GTE is a rare beast indeed, then. The Scimitar Will Have To Move Another Day UK Barn Finds/ YouTube The next issue for Claire and Elton was that a tree had grown up the side of the Scimitar, blocking it in. With some more hedge trimming, a Morris Minor and Morris Oxford are revealed next to the Scimitar GTE. Sadly, it seems the GTE wouldn't be moving in this episode, and according to Elton, had a lot of shrubbery in the interior too. The "Field of Dreams" also reveals a Rover 3500, a number of Saabs, and some MGs. It seems we may not know the future of the GTE, but keep an eye on an auction near you, especially if you happen to live in the UK. A Scimitar GTE Is Probably Not Worth Pulling Out Of A Bush, Sadly Bring A Trailer It turns out that you probably don't need to be eying up Scimitars that have lived in hedges anyway. The Scimitar market took a hammering for a long time after production ended in 1986 (yes, 1986) with high insurance premiums, and perhaps an unfair reputation for reliability, keeping buyers away. The 3.0-liter Essex V6 engine was reliable, however. This all means that there are still a fair few Scimitars around, and roadworthy examples are not a lot of money. The average price for a Reliant Scimitar GTE is $3,879, says Classic.com, and there really are a lot of cars selling for around that price, especially in Europe. We found a Scimitar project car that sold for just $750 in a Bonhams sale. Scimitars in the US tend to go for a bit more, but not a lot more, and the cars should be easy to import from Europe if you really want to. Sadly, the bottom line is, this is a classic car that's probably not even worth pulling out of a bush and giving a jet wash to. Buying A Scimitar Puts You In Royal Company Bring A Trailer The Scimitar might be cheap, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have star quality. Princess Anne owned a total of eight Scimitar cars, according to the BBC. Her first Reliant Scimitar car was a joint 20th birthday and Christmas gift from her parents Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. It is said to feature a horse and rider on the bonnet, as well as a personalized number plate. The car was donated by the Princess RoyalGreat British Car Journey, a museum in Ambergate, Derbyshire.Source: Classic.com
